Crypto profit formulas
- Total cost = coins × buy price × (1 + buy fee)
- Coins bought from an amount invested = amount ÷ (1 + buy fee) ÷ buy price
- Proceeds = coins × sell price × (1 − sell fee)
- Profit = proceeds − total cost, and ROI = profit ÷ total cost × 100
- Break-even price = buy price × (1 + buy fee) ÷ (1 − sell fee)
Example: $1,000 invested with 0.5% fees each way
| Price change | Proceeds | Profit | ROI |
|---|---|---|---|
| -50% | $495.02 | −$504.98 | -50.50% |
| -20% | $792.04 | −$207.96 | -20.80% |
| 0% | $990.05 | −$9.95 | -1.00% |
| +1% | $999.95 | −$0.05 | -0.00% |
| +20% | $1,188.06 | $188.06 | +18.81% |
| +50% | $1,485.07 | $485.07 | +48.51% |
| +100% | $1,980.10 | $980.10 | +98.01% |
Fees mean an unchanged price is a small loss, and the price has to rise about 1% to break even. Higher fee tiers, spreads and network fees raise that hurdle further.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate crypto profit?
Profit = sale proceeds − total cost. Sale proceeds are coins × sell price × (1 − sell fee) and the total cost is coins × buy price × (1 + buy fee). ROI is profit ÷ total cost × 100.
How are trading fees included?
The buy fee is added on top of the purchase value, so if you invest $1,000 with a 0.5% fee, about $995.02 buys coins and $4.98 is the fee. The sell fee is taken from the sale value.
What is the break-even price?
It is the sell price at which you exactly recover your total cost after both fees: buy price × (1 + buy fee) ÷ (1 − sell fee). With 0.5% fees on each side the price has to rise about 1% just to break even.
Does this include taxes?
Only if you enter a tax rate, and then only as a simple estimate on a positive profit. Crypto tax rules depend on your country, how long you held the coins and your income, so check with a tax professional.
Can I use it for any coin or token?
Yes. It works with any asset priced per unit, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and small tokens priced in fractions of a cent. Prices below 1 are shown with six significant digits.
Is this investment advice?
No. The calculator is for information only. It does not predict prices or recommend buying or selling, and it runs entirely in your browser without sending your numbers anywhere.
