Worked example
A newsletter goes to 20,000 subscribers. 240 bounce, so 19,760 are delivered (bounce rate 1.2%). 6,900 people open (open rate 34.92%) and 610 click (CTR 3.09%, CTOR 8.84%). 48 of the clickers buy, a 7.87% conversion rate, bringing in $3,600, which is about $0.18 per delivered email, or $182 per 1,000 delivered.
Tips for reading your numbers
Compare like with like. Track the same metrics per campaign type (newsletter, promotion, automation), because they behave very differently.
Low CTOR with a good open rate means the subject line worked but the content or offer did not. Test layout, a single clear call to action and the first lines of copy.
Rising unsubscribes often follow a jump in frequency. Try a preference centre that lets people choose fewer emails instead of leaving.
Complaints matter most. A few complaints per thousand can hurt inbox placement for your whole list, so make the unsubscribe link easy to find and honour it quickly.
Frequently asked questions
How is email open rate calculated?
Open rate = unique opens ÷ delivered emails × 100. Delivered emails are emails sent minus bounces. For example, 6,900 unique opens from 19,760 delivered emails is a 34.92% open rate.
What is the difference between CTR and click-to-open rate?
Click-through rate (CTR) divides unique clicks by delivered emails, so it measures the whole campaign. Click-to-open rate (CTOR) divides unique clicks by unique opens, so it measures how compelling the content was for people who actually opened.
Why are open rates less reliable now?
Since 2021, Apple Mail Privacy Protection preloads email images, which registers an open even if the person never looks at the email. Other privacy tools block images, hiding real opens. Many marketers now judge campaigns mainly on clicks, conversions and revenue.
What is an acceptable spam complaint rate?
Gmail and Yahoo's bulk sender requirements, in force since 2024, ask senders to keep spam complaint rates below 0.3%, and Google recommends staying under 0.1%. Above that, more of your mail can land in spam.
What is a good bounce rate?
A total bounce rate under about 2% is a widely used target. Higher bounce rates usually mean an old or purchased list. Remove hard bounces (invalid addresses) right away and clean your list regularly.
How do I calculate revenue per email?
Revenue per email = revenue attributed to the campaign ÷ emails delivered. Some teams divide by emails sent instead; the calculator shows both. Multiplying by 1,000 gives revenue per thousand emails, handy for comparing campaigns of different sizes.
Should I use unique or total opens and clicks?
Use unique counts, which count each subscriber once. Total counts include repeat opens and clicks by the same person and make rates look higher than the share of people who engaged.
