How to use the Asset Turnover Ratio Calculator
Enter net revenue and choose whether it covers a year, a quarter or a month.
Enter total assets at the end of the period, and at the start if you want the average.
Add net fixed assets (PP&E after depreciation) to get the fixed asset turnover ratio.
Optionally add net income and a benchmark to see ROA and how you compare.
Press Calculate asset turnover to see the ratios, the formula steps and the what-if tables.
Asset turnover formulas
Total asset turnover = Net revenue ÷ ((Beginning total assets + Ending total assets) ÷ 2)
Fixed asset turnover = Net revenue ÷ Average net PP&E
Example with the default figures: net revenue of $4,800,000 and total assets of $3,800,000 at the start and $4,200,000 at the end give average assets of $4,000,000 and an asset turnover of 1.20×. Average net fixed assets of $1,600,000 give a fixed asset turnover of 3.00×. Put another way, the company needs about $0.83 of total assets to support each $1 of annual sales.

Effect on turnover
Watch out for
Sales grow on the same asset base
Rises
Capacity limits; growth may soon need new investment
Large acquisition near year end
Falls (assets jump, little revenue yet)
Use average assets or pro-forma revenue
Cash piles up on the balance sheet
Falls
Some analysts exclude excess cash from assets
Equipment ages and depreciates
Fixed asset turnover rises
Underinvestment, not efficiency
Selling or leasing back property
Rises
Lease obligations replace owned assets
Excess inventory or slow collections

Tips for using asset turnover
Compare like with like: a turnover of 0.4× is normal for a power utility and alarming for a clothing store.
Look at the trend: a ratio slipping year after year while revenue grows means assets are growing faster than sales.
Pair it with margins: turnover tells you about efficiency, not profit. ROA = margin × turnover combines the two.
Be consistent: use net revenue (after returns and discounts) and the same asset definition every year.
Frequently asked questions
What is the asset turnover ratio formula?
Asset turnover = net revenue ÷ average total assets, where average total assets = (beginning assets + ending assets) ÷ 2. A ratio of 1.2 means the company generated $1.20 of sales for every $1 of assets during the year.
What is a good asset turnover ratio?
It depends on the industry. Retailers and wholesalers commonly run at 2× or more because they hold mainly inventory, while utilities, telecoms and real estate firms with heavy infrastructure are often below 0.5×. A ratio is most useful compared with the company's own history and with direct competitors.
What is the fixed asset turnover ratio?
Fixed asset turnover = net revenue ÷ average net property, plant and equipment (after accumulated depreciation). It shows how productively a company uses its factories, stores and equipment, and is especially useful for manufacturers and other capital-intensive businesses.
Why use average total assets instead of ending assets?
Revenue is earned over the whole year, so it should be compared with the assets the company had during the year. Averaging the opening and closing balance sheets avoids distortion when a company makes a large acquisition or asset sale near year end.
Can asset turnover be too high?
A very high ratio can signal that a company is running with too little capacity or aging, heavily depreciated equipment, which may require large reinvestment later. Fixed asset turnover rises automatically as assets depreciate, so check capital spending trends alongside it.
How does asset turnover relate to ROA and ROE?
Return on assets = net profit margin × asset turnover, and ROE = ROA × equity multiplier. This is the DuPont breakdown: a business can earn the same ROA with thin margins and high turnover (a discount grocer) or high margins and low turnover (a luxury brand).
How do I calculate asset turnover from quarterly figures?
Annualize the quarter's revenue by multiplying by 4 (or a month by 12) before dividing by average assets, or add up the last four quarters of revenue. Seasonal businesses should prefer the trailing twelve months, since a single quarter can be unrepresentative.
