How to use the New Jersey Paycheck Calculator
Enter your pay: annual salary, or hourly rate with hours and overtime.
Pick pay frequency and filing status; NJ uses its own bracket table for each.
Enter exemptions and dependents, and tick the box if your plan is a 403(b) or 457.
Check the UI, SDI and FLI rates; the defaults are the 2026 employee rates.
Press Calculate take-home pay to see every NJ line item per check, month and year.
NJ's Department of Labor sets these each calendar year; check the current figures on the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development site and edit the rates above if they differ. Employees covered by an approved private disability plan may see a different SDI line.
Frequently asked questions
What are the New Jersey income tax brackets?
Single filers pay 1.4% up to $20,000, 1.75% to $35,000, 3.5% to $40,000, 5.525% to $75,000, 6.37% to $500,000, 8.97% to $1 million and 10.75% above. Married couples filing jointly and heads of household have wider lower brackets: 1.4% to $20,000, 1.75% to $50,000, 2.45% to $70,000, 3.5% to $80,000, 5.525% to $150,000, then the same top rates.
What are SDI, FLI and UI on a New Jersey pay stub?
They are state payroll insurance contributions. UI/WF/SWF funds unemployment and workforce programs (0.425% of the first $44,800 of 2026 wages), SDI funds temporary disability benefits and FLI funds paid family leave (0.19% and 0.23% of the first $171,100 in 2026). The rates are reset every year, so they are editable here.
Is a 401(k) contribution taxed in New Jersey?
No, 401(k) elective deferrals are excluded from NJ wages. But New Jersey does tax employee contributions to 403(b) and 457 plans when they are made, which matters for teachers, nurses and public employees. Tick the 403(b)/457 box to include them.
How much are New Jersey exemptions?
New Jersey allows $1,000 for yourself and $1,000 for a spouse, plus $1,500 for each dependent child or other dependent. New Jersey has no standard deduction, so exemptions are the main reduction for most wage earners.
Do New Jersey cities have an income tax?
No municipal income tax applies to most workers. Newark charges a 1% payroll tax to employers, not employees, so it does not reduce your paycheck. Philadelphia's wage tax can apply if you live in NJ but work in Philadelphia.
I live in New Jersey and work in Pennsylvania. Which state taxes me?
New Jersey and Pennsylvania have a reciprocal agreement: wages are taxed only by your home state. A NJ resident working in PA files form REV-419 so the employer withholds New Jersey tax instead of Pennsylvania tax.
