Virginia paycheck formula
Virginia taxable income = wages − 401(k) − section 125 − standard deduction − $930 × exemptions − $800 × age/blind exemptions
Virginia tax = 2% of the first $3,000 + 3% of the next $2,000 + 5% of the next $12,000 + 5.75% of the rest
For income over $17,000 that simplifies to $720 + 5.75% × (taxable income − $17,000)
Example: a single filer earning $65,000 with one exemption has Virginia taxable income of $65,000 − $8,750 − $930 = $55,320. Virginia tax = $720 + 5.75% × $38,320 = $2,923.40 a year, about $112.44 per biweekly check and an effective rate of 4.50% of gross.

Frequently asked questions
What are the Virginia income tax brackets?
Virginia taxes the first $3,000 of taxable income at 2%, $3,001 to $5,000 at 3%, $5,001 to $17,000 at 5% and everything above $17,000 at 5.75%. The brackets have not been indexed since 1990, so most full-time workers pay 5.75% on most of their income.
What is the Virginia standard deduction for 2026?
Virginia raised its standard deduction to $8,500 single / $17,000 joint for 2024 and $8,750 / $17,500 for 2025, and the state budget kept the higher amount for 2026. Married filing separately uses $8,750 each. If you itemize federally, you must itemize for Virginia too.
How much is the Virginia personal exemption?
Virginia allows $930 for yourself, your spouse and each dependent, and an extra $800 for each taxpayer or spouse who is 65 or older or blind. These go on line 1 and line 2 of Form VA-4 for withholding.
Do Virginia counties or cities have an income tax?
No. Virginia localities, including Fairfax, Arlington, Richmond and Virginia Beach, do not tax wages. Local revenue comes from property, sales and personal property (car) taxes.
Does Virginia tax 401(k) or TSP contributions?
No. Virginia starts from federal adjusted gross income, so traditional 401(k), 403(b) and Thrift Savings Plan contributions lower Virginia taxable wages. Roth contributions do not.
I live in Virginia and work in DC or Maryland. Which state taxes me?
DC cannot tax non-residents' wages, so a Virginia resident working in DC pays only Virginia tax. Virginia and Maryland have a reciprocal agreement for wages, so a Virginia resident working in Maryland files Maryland form MW507 to have only Virginia tax withheld.
