How the grocery budget is calculated
Monthly budget = Σ (people × monthly cost for their age group) × household-size factor × plan factor × (1 + local adjustment) × share of meals at home.
Household-size factors follow USDA guidance: 1 person +20%, 2 people +10%, 3 people +5%, 4 people 0%, 5–6 people −5%, 7 or more −10%.
Weekly = monthly × 12 ÷ 52. Cost per meal = monthly budget ÷ (people × 3 meals × 30.4 days × share at home).

Frequently asked questions
How much should a family of 4 spend on groceries?
With two adults and two school-age children, a thrifty budget is roughly $975 a month, a moderate budget about $1,300 and a liberal budget about $1,580 at 2024 US average prices. Your local prices and eating habits can move this a lot.
What are the USDA food plans?
The US Department of Agriculture publishes four food plans (Thrifty, Low-Cost, Moderate-Cost and Liberal) that estimate the cost of a nutritious diet prepared at home, by age and sex. The Thrifty plan is the basis for SNAP benefits. This calculator uses the same structure with approximate national average costs.
Why does a single person pay more per person?
Small households buy smaller packages and waste more, so the USDA suggests adding 20% for one person, 10% for two and 5% for three, and subtracting 5% for five or six people and 10% for seven or more.
How much should one person spend on groceries per month?
A single adult aged 19 to 50 is about $315 a month on a thrifty budget and about $335 on a low-cost budget after the single-person adjustment, at 2024 average prices. Moderate is about $420 and liberal about $510.
How do I lower my grocery cost per meal?
Plan meals for the week, cook from scratch, buy staples like rice, beans, oats and frozen vegetables in bulk, use store brands, and use leftovers. Comparing your real spending with the thrifty and low-cost rows shows how much room there is.
Does this include eating out?
No. The budgets cover food bought at stores and eaten at home. If some meals are eaten at work, school or restaurants, lower the meals-at-home share so the budget only covers the meals you cook.
