Common US grading scales
There is no single national scale; districts and schools set their own. These are the two most widely used. GPA here is unweighted (honors or AP bonuses are not added).

Worked GPA example
A student earns A (4.0) in English, B+ (3.3) in Math and B (3.0) in Science, each worth 1 credit, plus A- (3.7) in PE worth 0.5 credit.
Attendance rate is days present ÷ (days present + days absent). For 172 days present and 6 absent, that is 172 ÷ 178 = 96.6%.
Tips for writing report card comments
Start with a specific strength, then name one clear next step, and end with encouragement.
Describe behavior and skills rather than personality: "checks work before turning it in" says more than "careful".
Keep subject comments short (a phrase or one sentence) and use the overall comment for the big picture.
For homeschool records, note curriculum or books used and projects completed; it makes later transcripts easier.
Frequently asked questions
How is the GPA calculated?
Each grade is converted to grade points using the scale (for example A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3). The term GPA is the credit-weighted average: GPA = sum of (points x credits) / sum of credits. A half-credit subject counts half as much as a full-credit one. The overall GPA uses each subject's final grade the same way.
How is the final grade for a subject worked out?
If every period has a percentage, the final is the average percentage, converted to a letter with your scale; for example 92, 94, 96 and 91 average 93.25%, an A. If any period uses a letter, the tool averages the grade points instead and picks the closest letter.
Can I use letters, pass/fail or S/N marks?
Yes. Letters on your scale count toward GPA. Any other mark, such as P, S, N or E, is printed on the report card exactly as typed but is not included in GPA, which suits art, music, PE or early-grade subjects.
Which grading scale should I use?
Many US schools use a plus/minus scale where A is 93 to 100, A- is 90 to 92 and so on down to D at 65, with F below that. Others use a simple 10-point scale (A 90+, B 80+, C 70+, D 60+). Choose a preset or edit the table to match your school, district or homeschool policy.
Is a homeschool report card official?
A report card you create is a record of your own grading. Requirements for homeschool records vary by state: some ask for portfolios, test scores or annual assessments, and colleges usually want a transcript. Keeping a report card each term makes those documents easy to assemble later.
Where is my class data stored?
Only in your browser's local storage on this device, so it is still there next time you open the page. Nothing is uploaded. Download the CSV as a backup or to move the data to another computer or a spreadsheet.
