What comes out of a New York paycheck
New York workers face more payroll lines than most states. In order, a typical stub shows:
Federal income tax from your W-4, using the IRS percentage method (Publication 15-T).
Social Security 6.2% up to $184,500 of 2026 wages, and Medicare 1.45% plus 0.9% above $200,000.
New York State income tax: graduated rates on NY taxable income (wages after pre-tax deductions, minus the NY standard deduction of $8,000 single, $16,050 married filing jointly or $11,200 head of household, minus $1,000 per dependent).
Local tax: New York City residents pay 3.078%–3.876%; Yonkers residents pay a 16.75% surcharge on their state tax; nonresidents working in Yonkers pay 0.5% of wages. Other NY localities have no income tax.
SDI: 0.5% of wages, at most $0.60 a week, and Paid Family Leave: 0.432% of gross wages in 2026, up to $411.91 a year.

Living in the city costs a $100,000 earner about $3,440 a year in NYC tax. Commuters who live in New Jersey, Connecticut or elsewhere in New York and work in Manhattan do not owe NYC income tax, though they still owe New York State tax on wages earned in the state.
Ways to raise a New York paycheck
Pre-tax 401(k) and 457 savings lower federal, state and city tax at once: in NYC a single filer in the 22% federal bracket saves about 31–32 cents of tax per dollar contributed.
Commuter benefits: pre-tax transit and parking (required to be offered by most NYC employers with 20+ staff) skip income tax and FICA.
File IT-2104 separately from your federal W-4 if you want different New York withholding, for example when you have a second job.
Frequently asked questions
What taxes come out of a New York paycheck?
Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%), New York State income tax, New York City or Yonkers tax if you live there (or work in Yonkers), state disability insurance (SDI, at most $0.60 a week) and Paid Family Leave (0.432% of wages in 2026, capped at $411.91 a year).
What are the New York State income tax rates?
For 2026, New York's rates run from 3.9% on the first $8,500 of taxable income for single filers up to 10.9% above $25 million; most workers fall in the 5.4% or 5.9% brackets. The 2026 budget trimmed the five lowest rates by 0.1 point compared with 2025 (4% to 6%).
How much is NYC income tax?
New York City residents pay an extra 3.078% to 3.876% on New York taxable income. For a single filer, income above $50,000 is taxed at 3.876%. People who work in NYC but live elsewhere do not pay NYC income tax.
How does the Yonkers tax work?
Yonkers residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their net New York State tax. Nonresidents who earn wages in Yonkers pay an earnings tax of 0.5% of those wages.
What are SDI and Paid Family Leave deductions?
Both fund New York insurance programs. Employees pay up to 0.5% of wages for disability, capped at $0.60 per week ($31.20 a year), and a Paid Family Leave premium of 0.432% of gross wages in 2026, up to $411.91 a year (2025: 0.388%, up to $354.53).
How much is $100,000 after taxes in NYC?
A single filer living in New York City who earns $100,000 with no 401(k) or benefits keeps about $70,400 a year in 2026 (about $2,709 per biweekly check) after federal, NY State, NYC, FICA, SDI and PFL. Outside NYC the same salary leaves about $73,900. Enter your own W-4 and benefits for a closer estimate.
Is this the same as my employer's withholding?
It follows the same tax rules, but employers use the NYS-50-T withholding tables and IRS Publication 15-T, round each period and track year-to-date wages, so expect small differences. High earners may also owe more at filing because of New York's tax benefit recapture.
