How to use the Paragraph Counter
Paste or type your text, or open a .txt file. The counts update as you type.
Choose how paragraphs are separated: by a blank line (most documents) or by every line break (chat logs, lists, some copied web text).
Read the summary cards for the paragraph count, averages and the longest and shortest paragraph.
Check the breakdown table to see words, sentences and characters per paragraph, and sort it by length.
Copy the stats or download a CSV of every paragraph.
Blank-line mode vs line-break mode
Plain text has no real "paragraph" marker, only line breaks. The counter offers the two conventions you are most likely to meet:
Mode
A new paragraph starts…
Best for
Blank line between paragraphs
after an empty line
Essays, articles, emails, text copied from Word, Google Docs or most web pages
Every line break
at every new line with text
Lists, chat messages, subtitles, poems, text pasted from apps that use single line breaks
Text from Word and Google Docs usually pastes with a blank line between paragraphs. If your count looks too low, switch modes; if it looks too high (each wrapped line counted separately), switch back.
Typical paragraph lengths
Type of writing
Common paragraph length
Blog posts and web articles
1 to 4 sentences, about 20 to 80 words
News stories
1 to 3 sentences
School essays
4 to 8 sentences, about 80 to 200 words
Academic papers
Often 150 to 250 words
Emails
2 to 4 sentences per paragraph, few paragraphs
These are style conventions rather than rules. A good paragraph covers one idea: a topic sentence, support, and a link to what comes next.
Tips for better paragraphs
Split long paragraphs at a change of idea, not in the middle of an argument.
Vary the length. A short paragraph after a long one adds emphasis.
Check the shortest paragraph. One-sentence paragraphs work as emphasis, but several in a row can feel choppy.
Five-paragraph essay? Use the table to make sure your three body paragraphs are roughly balanced.
Frequently asked questions
How does the paragraph counter decide where a paragraph ends?
In the default mode a paragraph ends at a blank line (two line breaks in a row), which is how most documents, emails and web pages separate paragraphs. In the line-break mode every line that contains text counts as its own paragraph. Empty lines are never counted as paragraphs in either mode.
Why does it say I have only one paragraph?
Text copied from some apps uses single line breaks between paragraphs and no blank lines. Switch to "Every line break starts a new paragraph" and the count will match what you see. The tool shows a hint when this is likely.
How many paragraphs should an essay have?
The classic school essay has five paragraphs: an introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. Longer essays simply add body paragraphs; a 1,000-word essay often has 6 to 8. Always follow your assignment's instructions.
How long should a paragraph be?
There is no fixed rule, but paragraphs of about 50 to 150 words (roughly 3 to 6 sentences) are comfortable for most readers. Online writing often uses shorter paragraphs. The tool flags paragraphs of 150 words or more so you can decide whether to split them.
How are sentences counted?
A sentence ends at a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis followed by a space or the end of the paragraph. Common abbreviations such as Mr., Dr., e.g. and a.m. are not treated as sentence endings. Unusual formatting can make the count differ by one or two from a manual count.
Are headings counted as paragraphs?
Yes. A heading on its own line, separated by blank lines, counts as a paragraph, because the counter cannot tell headings from short paragraphs in plain text. Remove headings first if you only want body paragraphs.
Is my text uploaded?
No. All counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Your last text is kept only in this browser's local storage so it is still there when you come back.
