How to use the Word Count to Pages

    1. Enter your word count, or switch to Paste text and the words are counted for you.
    2. Choose the font and size your assignment or document uses, for example Times New Roman 12 pt.
    3. Pick the line spacing, margins and page size. Most US essays use double spacing, 1-inch margins and Letter paper.
    4. Read the estimate: the page count, the words per page it is based on and how full the last page is.
    5. Check the quick table to compare common word counts single and double spaced with the same settings.

    The words-per-page formula

Every estimate on this page comes from one transparent formula. Start from the baseline of 550 words on a single-spaced US Letter page in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins, then scale it:

    words per page = 550 × font factor × (12 ÷ font size)² × (text area ÷ 58.5 sq in) ÷ line spacing

and pages = word count ÷ words per page.

    Worked example: a 1,500-word essay in Arial 12 pt, double-spaced, 1-inch margins on Letter paper. Words per page = 550 × 0.88 × 1 × 1 ÷ 2 ≈ 242, so the essay fills 1,500 ÷ 242 ≈ 6.2 pages. The same essay in Times New Roman would be 1,500 ÷ 275 ≈ 5.5 pages.

Figures use Times New Roman 12 pt, 1-inch margins and Letter paper. If your teacher sets a page limit instead of a word limit, divide by the words per page in reverse: a 5-page double-spaced paper is roughly 5 × 275 ≈ 1,375 words.

    Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 1000 words?

With Times New Roman 12 pt, 1-inch margins and Letter paper, 1,000 words is about 1.8 pages single-spaced and about 3.6 pages double-spaced. With Arial 12 pt it is a little longer: roughly 2.1 pages single-spaced and 4.1 pages double-spaced.

How many pages is 500 words?

500 words is a little under one page single-spaced (about 0.9 pages) and just under two pages double-spaced (about 1.8 pages) in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins.

How many words are on a page?

A single-spaced page in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins holds about 550 words, and a double-spaced page about 275. Wider fonts such as Arial, Verdana or Courier New fit fewer words, and smaller font sizes or narrower margins fit more.

Does the font really change the page count?

Yes. Fonts have different average letter widths. Times New Roman is narrow, so it fits the most words. Arial and Helvetica fit about 12% fewer, Verdana and Courier New about 22 to 25% fewer, which can add a page or more to a long essay.

Why is my page count in Word different?

Real documents contain headings, titles, paragraph breaks, short last lines, lists, quotes and spacing before or after paragraphs. Those use space without adding words, so a real document is often 5 to 15% longer than a pure-text estimate. The calculator gives the baseline for plain paragraphs.

How many pages is 2000 words double spaced?

About 7.3 pages in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins on Letter paper, and about 8.3 pages in Arial 12 pt.

Is A4 different from US Letter?

A little. A4 is narrower but taller than Letter, so with the same margins its text area is about 4% larger and it holds slightly more words per page.
