How to use the Words That Start With Finder
- Type the first letters in Starts with, or tap a letter A–Z.
- Add more filters if you like: Ends with, Contains, Exclude letters and Length.
- Pick a sort order. Most common puts everyday words first.
- Click a word to copy it, or use Copy all / Download for the whole list.
Ways to use the word finder
- Word games and puzzles: list five-letter words that start with known letters and exclude letters you have ruled out, or find words that end in a given pattern for crosswords.
- Teaching and phonics: collect words that start with a blend such as bl, ch or str, or end in -tion or -ing, for spelling lists and worksheets. Tick Common words only to keep the list age-appropriate and familiar.
- Writing and naming: find alliterative words for headlines, slogans, poems and product names, or words containing a particular syllable.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find 5 letter words that start with a certain letter?
Type the letter or letters in Starts with and choose 5 in the Length menu. The list updates instantly and shows the most common five-letter words first. Add Contains or Exclude letters to narrow it down, for example when solving a word puzzle.
How are words sorted by commonness?
About 4,400 everyday English words are marked as common and shown first, with the most frequent words such as the, have and with at the top. The remaining words are ordered by an estimate based on how many related forms each word has in the dictionary and on its length, so ordinary words come before rare technical ones.
Can I combine starts with and ends with?
Yes. All filters work together. For example Starts with re plus Ends with ing lists words like reading, returning and remaining. Contains can be any letter sequence that appears anywhere in the word.
Which word list is used?
The finder uses a list of about 109,000 English words in American spelling, including plurals and verb forms. It does not include proper nouns, abbreviations or hyphenated words. It is not an official Scrabble tournament list.
Can I use wildcards?
Use ? or _ in any filter for one unknown letter. For example Starts with c?t matches cat, cot and cut followed by any letters, and Contains a?e matches words like gate or table.
Does it work offline?
