Common grammar mistakes and how to fix them
Its vs. it's:it's is short for "it is" or "it has" (it's raining); its shows possession (the dog wagged its tail).
Your vs. you're:you're means "you are" (you're welcome); your means belonging to you (your email).
A vs. an: the choice depends on the sound, not the letter: an hour, an MBA, but a user, a one-time fee.
Subject-verb agreement: a plural subject takes a plural verb: some of them are, the results show, each of the items is.
Could of / should of: the correct form is could have (or could've). "Of" only sounds similar.
Then vs. than: use than for comparisons (better than) and then for time or sequence (first this, then that).
Tips for better proofreading
Read the explanation before accepting a fix. Names, product terms and quotes are often flagged even though they are correct; use Ignore or Ignore rule for those.
Pick the right English variant. "Colour" is correct in UK English but flagged in US English, and vice versa.
Check readability too. Grammar can be perfect while sentences are still too long. Run your text through the Readability Checker to see its grade level.
Read it aloud once. No checker understands your intent; reading aloud still catches missing words and awkward phrasing.
Frequently asked questions
Is this grammar checker free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no word limit per day and no premium tier. Texts longer than about 18,000 characters are split into chunks and checked one after another.
How does the grammar check work?
Your text is checked by LanguageTool, an open-source proofreading engine with thousands of grammar, spelling and style rules. The tool sends the text directly from your browser to the public LanguageTool API and shows the results here. Nothing is stored by FreeToolCabin.
Is my text private?
The text is sent only to the LanguageTool API to be checked and is not saved on our site. LanguageTool states that texts sent to its public API are not stored. If the service cannot be reached, a basic offline check runs entirely in your browser instead.
What do the underline colors mean?
Red means a possible spelling mistake, blue a grammar problem such as subject-verb agreement or a wrong article, orange a punctuation or spacing issue, and purple a style suggestion such as wordiness or a redundant phrase.
Which languages are supported?
English (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa), German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Catalan, Swedish, Danish, Greek, Romanian and more. Pick Auto-detect if you are not sure.
Should I accept every suggestion?
Not always. Automatic checkers can flag names, technical terms or deliberate style choices. Read the explanation for each issue, ignore the ones that do not fit, and use Accept all only after a quick review. You can undo it.
What happens if the checker is offline?
If the LanguageTool service cannot be reached or the rate limit is hit, the tool falls back to a built-in check for common errors: repeated words, a/an, capitalization, spacing, frequent misspellings and confusions like could of or its/it's.
Are all the tools on FreeToolCabin tested for quality and accuracy?
Yes! Every tool on our site undergoes automated Q/A testing in real browser environments to ensure high precision, correct output, and zero errors. If you happen to spot a bug or have a suggestion, please contact us at [email protected] and our team will review it right away.
