Scrabble Word Checker

Settle a challenge in seconds: type a word (or every word a play forms) to see whether it is valid, how many points the tiles are worth, which letters hook onto it and what else its letters spell. All two-letter words come with a short meaning.

Last updated:

Check several words at once by separating them with spaces or commas, like a challenge on a play that forms more than one word.

All valid two-letter words with meanings

Uses a bundled tournament-style list built from a ~109,000-word English dictionary: the official-style two-letter list, with abbreviations and offensive words removed. It is not the official NASPA or Collins tournament dictionary, so a few rare words may differ. Scores are tile face values (7-letter words also show the +50 bingo total); board premium squares are not included.

How to use the Scrabble Word Checker

  2. Press Check word (or Enter) to see the verdict and score.
  3. Read the hooks and anagrams to find extra plays.
  4. Click any suggested word to check it in turn.
  5. Look up a definition online if you want to know what a word means.

Words worth learning

  • Q without U: QI, QAT, QAID, QOPH, FAQIR, TRANQ, SHEQEL.
  • Short J, X and Z words: JO, XI, XU, AX, EX, OX, ZA, ZAX, JAB, ZEK.
  • Vowel dumps: AA, AE, AI, OE, EAU, AIOLI, OUREBI help when your rack has too many vowels.
  • No-vowel words: HM, MM, SH, BRR, HMM, NTH, PST, TSK, CWM, CRWTH.

How the check works

Each word is lowercased and stripped of symbols, then looked up in the word list. For a valid word the tool tests all 26 letters in front of and behind it to find hooks, and groups the list by sorted letters to find anagrams. For an invalid word it tries every single-letter deletion, insertion, substitution and swap of neighbouring letters to suggest valid words one step away. Score = sum of tile face values; double and triple word totals simply multiply that sum.

Frequently asked questions

Which word list does this checker use?

A bundled tournament-style list built from an English dictionary of about 109,000 words, with the standard two-letter word list, abbreviations removed and offensive words excluded. It is close to the lists used in club play but is not the official NASPA Word List or Collins Scrabble Words, so check those for official tournament rulings.

Is QI a valid Scrabble word?

Yes. QI (the life force in Chinese philosophy) is one of the most useful words in the game because it plays the Q without a U. QAT, QAID, QOPH and TRANQ are other Q-without-U words.

Is ZA a valid Scrabble word?

ZA (slang for pizza) is valid in the North American tournament list and in Collins. It is one of only a few two-letter words with a Z.

What are hooks in Scrabble?

A hook is a single letter you can add to the front or back of a word already on the board to make a new valid word, such as adding S to make a plural or adding C to OLD to make COLD. Hooks let you play parallel to existing words and score two words at once.

How is the Scrabble score calculated?

Each tile has a face value: A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T and R are 1; D and G are 2; B, C, M and P are 3; F, H, V, W and Y are 4; K is 5; J and X are 8; Q and Z are 10. Add them up, apply any premium squares on the board, and add 50 points if you used all 7 tiles in one turn.

What happens when a word is challenged?

In standard rules, if a challenged word is not valid the player takes the tiles back and scores nothing for that turn. If every word formed is valid, the challenger loses their next turn (or, in some tournament formats, the player gets a bonus). Check your house rules.

Does it work offline?

The word list is downloaded once from this site and the checking happens in your browser. Only the optional “Look up definition online” button contacts a free public dictionary, and only for the single word you click.
