How to choose the right synonym
True synonyms with exactly the same meaning are rare. Most words share one sense with your word but differ in strength, tone or usage. Before you swap a word, check three things:
Meaning:bright can mean intelligent or full of light. Pick a synonym that matches the sense you mean (clever vs. luminous).
Intensity:happy, glad, delighted and ecstatic describe the same feeling at very different strengths.
Register:buy, purchase and acquire mean the same, but sound casual, neutral and formal.

Frequently asked questions
Where do the synonyms come from?
Results come from the free Datamuse word API, which combines the WordNet lexical database with word-association data from large text collections. WordNet synonyms appear in the Closest synonyms group; words with a similar meaning follow in the other groups.
How are synonyms ranked?
Closest synonyms share a dictionary sense with your word. The remaining words are ranked by how often they are used in a similar meaning and split into Similar meaning and Loosely related. You can also sort A to Z or by how common each word is in English.
Can I search for phrases?
Yes. Short phrases such as make better or very big work too and return single words or phrases with a similar meaning, which is handy for tightening wordy writing.
Why does a synonym not fit my sentence?
Most words have several meanings, and a synonym usually matches only one of them. Use the part of speech filter and check the definition before replacing a word; for example, bright can mean smart or full of light.
How do I find a synonym that starts with a certain letter?
Type the letter or letters in the Starts with box. The list updates instantly, which is useful for crosswords, alliteration and acronyms. Combine it with the syllables filter for poems and song lyrics.
Is it free and private?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up. Only the word you search is sent to the Datamuse API to get results. Your recent searches are kept only in your own browser.
