How to use the SAT Vocabulary Flashcards
Start with Flashcards: read the word, try to recall its meaning, then click the card or press Space to flip it.
Rate yourself with I know it (K) or Still learning (L). Known words leave the "Everything not known" deck.
Narrow the deck with the Study and Words menus, for example Set 1 or only words you are still learning.
Switch to Quiz to test yourself with four-choice questions; wrong answers go back to Still learning.
Use the Word list to search, review everything at once or download the list as a CSV file.

Tips that make new words stick
Learn words in context. Read the example sentence aloud and write your own sentence using the word. The SAT asks which word fits a passage, not for dictionary definitions.
Group related words. Terse, laconic, succinct and concise all describe using few words, while verbose and garrulous are their opposites. Learning them together makes the differences clear.
Use word parts. Bene- means good (benevolent, benign), mal- means bad (malevolent), and -cide means killing; roots and prefixes help you guess unfamiliar words.
Watch for second meanings. Common words with less common meanings, such as sanction (to approve or to penalize), often appear in words-in-context questions.
Space your reviews. Seeing a word again after one day, three days and a week is far more effective than seeing it ten times in one evening.
Frequently asked questions
Which words are in this SAT vocabulary list?
363 advanced but common words of the kind that appear in SAT and PSAT reading passages, college-level texts and quality journalism, such as ambiguous, mitigate, pragmatic and ubiquitous. Each has a short definition in plain English and an original example sentence.
Does the current digital SAT still test vocabulary?
Yes, but in context. The digital SAT Reading and Writing section includes "words in context" questions that ask for the most logical and precise word in a short passage, and reading questions assume a strong academic vocabulary. Knowing precise meanings and how words are used in sentences is what helps, which is why every card includes an example.
How is my progress saved?
Your "known" and "still learning" marks are saved in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. Clearing your browser data, or using a different browser or device, starts fresh. Use Reset my progress in the Word list tab to start over on purpose.
What is the best way to learn SAT words with flashcards?
Study in small sets (such as 50 words), say or write the meaning before flipping, and be honest with I know it. Review the Still learning pile daily and quiz yourself with fill-in-the-blank questions, which train using words in context. Short daily sessions work better than cramming.
How do the quiz questions work?
Each question shows a definition, a word or a sentence with a blank, and four choices. Wrong choices are taken from words with the same part of speech so you have to know the meaning, not just the grammar. Missed words are automatically moved to Still learning so they come back in your flashcards.
Can I print or export the word list?
Yes. Press Download word list (CSV) in the Word list tab to get all words with part of speech, definition, example and your status, ready to open in a spreadsheet or print.
Is this free?
Yes, the flashcards, quizzes and word list are completely free and need no sign-up or account.
