Type a word, name or short phrase to see if it can be spelled with chemical element symbols. The tool finds every possible spelling, shows each as element tiles with atomic numbers and masses, and lets you download the result as a PNG.

Uses all 118 elements with IUPAC symbols and standard atomic weights (mass numbers in brackets for elements with no stable isotopes). Everything runs in your browser.

How to use the Periodic Table Word Speller
Type a word or name. Results appear as you type; spaces and punctuation split it into separate words.
Read the verdict: the tool says whether every word can be spelled and how many different spellings exist.
Browse spellings with the arrows under each word, or click one in the All spellings list. Choose Fewest tiles or Most tiles as the starting order.
Style the tiles: pick a color scheme and show or hide element names and atomic masses.
Download PNG to save the tiles as an image, or copy the spelling as text.
How the search finds every spelling
Element symbols are one letter (like C, O, N) or two letters (like Co, Na, Ba). At every position in a word there are at most two choices: use the next letter as a one-letter symbol, or the next two letters as a two-letter symbol. The tool first works backwards from the end of the word to mark which positions can still reach the end. It then walks forward through every choice that leads somewhere, which is a backtracking search that never wastes time on dead ends. The number of spellings is counted the same way, so even long words with thousands of spellings are handled instantly.
Letters that make spelling hard
Letter
Symbols that contain it
What it means for spelling
J
none
Any word with J is impossible
Q
none
Any word with Q is impossible
X
Xe
X must be followed by E
Z
Zn, Zr
Z must be followed by N or R
D
Db, Ds, Dy, Cd, Gd, Md, Nd, Pd
No D on its own, so it needs a partner letter
E, G, L, M, R, T, A
Only in two-letter symbols
Each must pair with the letter before or after it
Single-letter symbols are B, C, F, H, I, K, N, O, P, S, U, V, W and Y. Words built mostly from these letters, such as bacon (Ba-C-O-N), genius (Ge-Ni-U-S) or sonic (S-O-Ni-C), are the easiest to spell. Surprisingly, science cannot be spelled: its first E would have to pair with the I before it or the N after it, and neither Ie nor En is an element symbol.
Fun words to try
Try chocolate, carbonate, phonics, brownies, sonic and cupcakes, or your own name. Teachers often use element spellings for name tags, classroom door signs and chemistry-themed birthday cards, because looking up the symbols is a painless way to learn them.
Frequently asked questions
How does the periodic table word speller work?
It splits your word into pieces that match element symbols, which are one or two letters long. A backtracking search tries a one-letter symbol and a two-letter symbol at every position and keeps every path that reaches the end of the word, so it lists all possible spellings.
Which letters can never be spelled with elements?
J and Q do not appear in any element symbol, so any word containing J or Q cannot be fully spelled. Every other letter of the alphabet appears in at least one symbol, although some, like Z (only in Zn and Zr) and X (only in Xe), are hard to use.
Why does a word have more than one spelling?
Many letter pairs can be read either as one two-letter symbol or as two one-letter symbols. For example CO can be Co (cobalt) or C + O (carbon and oxygen). Each choice creates a different spelling.
What atomic masses are shown?
Tiles show the standard atomic weight rounded to at most three decimals. Elements with no stable isotopes, such as technetium and the superheavy elements, show the mass number of their most stable known isotope in brackets, as on most periodic tables.
Can I use it for a classroom poster or a name tag?
Yes. Download PNG creates a high-resolution image of the tiles that prints well. You can choose colors by element group, which also helps students learn which family each element belongs to.
Why are some letters shown as dashed blank tiles?
When a word cannot be fully spelled, the tool finds the spelling that leaves the fewest letters uncovered and shows those letters as dashed tiles. Turn off Fill gaps with blank tiles to hide partial spellings.
Are all the tools on FreeToolCabin tested for quality and accuracy?
Yes! Every tool on our site undergoes automated Q/A testing in real browser environments to ensure high precision, correct output, and zero errors. If you happen to spot a bug or have a suggestion, please contact us at [email protected] and our team will review it right away.
