Paste or type English text to find spelling mistakes instantly. Misspelled words are highlighted with the most likely corrections: click a word to fix it, fix every occurrence at once, or add names and jargon to your ignore list.

How to use the Spell Checker

1. Paste or type your text in the box. The spelling is checked automatically as you type.
2. Review the highlighted words in the results panel. Red marks a possible misspelling, orange a repeated word.
3. Click a highlighted word and pick a suggestion, or use the list on the right to fix every occurrence of a word at once.
4. Ignore correct words such as names, brands or technical terms. They go to your ignore list and won't be flagged again.
5. Copy the corrected text or download it as a .txt file.

How the suggestions are ranked

When a word is not in the dictionary, the checker compares it with every dictionary word of a similar length and measures the edit distance (optimal string alignment, a variant of Damerau–Levenshtein distance): the minimum number of single-letter insertions, deletions, substitutions or swaps of two neighbouring letters needed to turn one word into the other. Words within 1 or 2 edits are candidates. Among those, swapped letters (teh → the) and a single missing letter (jumpd → jumped) are ranked first, then frequent everyday words and words with the same first letter. Run-together words such as alot → a lot are suggested as two words.

What a spell checker cannot catch

A spell checker only knows whether a word exists. It will not notice a real word used in the wrong place, such as their / there / they're, its / it's, affect / effect or form typed instead of from. After fixing the flagged words, read your text once more, ideally aloud, to catch these.
