Traffic value formula
Estimated clicks = monthly search volume × CTR at your position
Keyword value = estimated clicks × cost per click (CPC)
Monthly traffic value = sum of all keyword values; annual value = monthly × 12
Example: "running shoes for women" has 18,000 searches a month, you rank 4th and the CPC is $1.35. With an 8% CTR at position 4 that is 1,440 clicks, worth 1,440 × $1.35 = $1,944 a month in equivalent ad spend. Moving to position 2 (15% CTR) would roughly double that to $3,645.

These are editable, rounded starting values that follow the general shape seen in click-through studies, not measurements. Your own search console "average CTR" by position is a better source, and branded queries usually have far higher CTR at position 1.
Using traffic value well
Find quick wins: keywords at positions 4-15 with high volume and CPC have the biggest gap between current value and "value at #1".
Report SEO in money terms: track total traffic value monthly alongside conversions to show the return on content and link building.
Separate branded terms: people searching your brand would usually find you anyway, so report non-branded value on its own.
Frequently asked questions
What is SEO traffic value?
SEO traffic value is the estimated amount you would have to spend on paid search ads to get the same clicks your organic rankings bring in for free. It is a common way to express the financial worth of SEO work, not a measure of revenue.
How is organic traffic value calculated?
For each keyword: estimated clicks = monthly search volume × click-through rate at your ranking position, and value = clicks × the keyword's cost per click. Add up all keywords to get the monthly value, and multiply by 12 for the annual figure.
Where do the CTR by position numbers come from?
The default curve is a rough illustration of the usual pattern: the first result gets far more clicks than lower ones and CTR drops steeply after the top 3. Published studies differ a lot, and real CTR depends on ads, featured snippets and brand. Replace it with averages from your own search console data for the best estimate.
Is traffic value the same as SEO ROI?
No. Traffic value is what the clicks would cost as ads. ROI compares what the traffic earns (conversions × profit) with what you spend on SEO. A keyword with high traffic value but no buyer intent may produce little revenue.
Why does my traffic value seem high?
High-CPC keywords in competitive industries can make even modest traffic worth a lot. Also, people may not click an ad as readily as an organic result, and branded searches would often be cheap to buy, so treat the number as an upper-bound comparison.
Where do I get search volume and CPC data?
Keyword planners in ad platforms show average monthly searches and suggested bids; most SEO tools export volume, position and CPC together. Your search console shows real impressions, clicks and average position for the queries you already rank for.
