How Shopify fees are calculated
With Shopify Payments: fee = order total × card rate + fixed fee. No extra transaction fee.
With a third-party gateway: fee = gateway's own fee + order total × Shopify's third-party transaction fee.
Payout = order total − fees. Profit = payout − product cost − your shipping cost − (monthly plan ÷ orders).
Margin = profit ÷ order total × 100.
Example on the Basic plan: a $50 item with $5 shipping is a $55 order. The fee is $55 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.90, so the payout is $53.10. With an $18 product and $6 shipping cost the profit is $29.10, a 52.9% margin.

A higher plan pays off when the fee savings exceed the extra subscription cost. Going from Basic to Grow saves 0.2% of sales, so it covers each extra $1 of monthly subscription for every $500 in monthly card sales. Rates differ by country, for in-person sales and for international cards, and Shopify updates them from time to time.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Shopify charge per transaction?
With Shopify Payments in the US, online card payments cost 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. There is no extra transaction fee when you use Shopify Payments.
What is the Shopify third-party transaction fee?
If you use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an additional fee on each order: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. You also pay your gateway's own processing fee.
Are Shopify fees charged on shipping?
Yes. Card processing fees apply to the full amount the customer pays, including shipping and any taxes collected, so this calculator applies the rate to price plus shipping.
How do I calculate my Shopify profit margin?
Profit = order total − payment fees − product cost − shipping cost − your share of the subscription. Margin = profit ÷ order total × 100. Enter your costs and the calculator does both.
When is it worth upgrading my Shopify plan?
Compare the fee savings with the higher subscription. The plan table shows the fees for the same order on each plan; multiply the difference by your monthly orders and compare it with the price difference between plans.
Is this an official Shopify calculator?
No. It is an independent estimate that runs in your browser. Rates vary by country and change over time, so confirm them in your Shopify admin under Settings > Payments.
