How to use the Stacked Discount Calculator
Enter the original price of the item.
Type the discounts in order, separated by commas, such as 20, 10.
Add a coupon amount and choose whether it applies before or after the percentages.
Add sales tax and quantity if needed.
Read the final price, savings and the effective total discount.
Stacked discount formula
Price after discounts = original × (1 − d1) × (1 − d2) × … with each discount as a decimal.
Effective discount = 1 − (1 − d1) × (1 − d2) × … For two discounts this is d1 + d2 − d1 × d2.
Final price = (price after discounts − coupon) × (1 + tax rate), when the coupon comes last.
Example: $120 with 20% and 10% off: 120 × 0.8 × 0.9 = $86.40, an effective discount of 28% ($33.60 saved). With 8% sales tax the total is $93.31.

Frequently asked questions
Is 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price. $100 − 20% = $80, then $80 − 10% = $72, which is 28% off in total, not 30%.
How do I calculate stacked discounts?
Multiply the price by (1 − each discount) in turn. For 20% and 10% off: price × 0.80 × 0.90 = price × 0.72. The combined discount is 1 − 0.72 = 28%.
Does the order of percentage discounts matter?
No. Multiplication works in any order, so 10% then 20% gives the same price as 20% then 10%. The order only matters when a fixed-amount coupon is involved.
Is it better to apply a coupon before or after the percentage discount?
For the shopper, a fixed coupon is worth more when it is applied after the percentage discounts, because then it isn't reduced by them. $100 with 20% off then $10 off is $70; $10 off first then 20% off is $72.
Is sales tax charged on the original or the discounted price?
In most US states, sales tax is charged on the price after store discounts and store coupons. Manufacturer coupons are often taxed on the pre-coupon price in some states, so receipts may differ slightly.
What is 50% off plus an extra 20% off?
It is 60% off in total: $100 × 0.50 × 0.80 = $40, so you pay 40% of the original price.
