How to use the Animal Sounds Board
Tap an animal to hear its sound. Its picture, sound word and a fun fact appear at the top.
Filter by group (Farm, Pets, Birds, Wild, Water, Bugs & reptiles) or type a name in the search box.
Keep "Say the animal's name" on so the name is spoken after each sound, which helps little ones connect sound and word.
Open the quiz tab, choose a level and press Start quiz. Listen, then tap the animal you think made the sound.
Play the sound again as often as you like, then press Next sound. After 10 rounds you get stars and your best score.

Learning activities with animal sounds
Sound and point. Tap a sound with the screen hidden and ask a toddler to point to the right animal in a picture book.
Copy cat. Play a sound, then take turns imitating it. Silly voices build listening and speaking skills.
Sort the groups. Use the Farm, Wild and Water filters to talk about where each animal lives.
Fact of the day. Pick a random animal each morning and read its fun fact together.
Quiz challenge. Start on Easy, then move to Medium and Hard when your child gets 3 stars.
How animals make their sounds
Mammals such as cows, lions and dogs use vocal folds in the larynx, like people do; bigger animals with longer vocal tracts usually sound deeper. Birds have a different voice organ called the syrinx, deep in the chest, which lets some species sing two notes at once. Insects do not use voices at all: crickets rub their wings together and bees, flies and mosquitoes buzz with fast wingbeats. Many frogs pump air across their vocal cords into a stretchy vocal sac that makes the call louder.
Frequently asked questions
What sounds do farm animals make?
The classic farm sounds are: cow "moo", horse "neigh", pig "oink", sheep "baa", goat "maa", chicken "cluck", rooster "cock-a-doodle-doo", chick "peep", duck "quack" and turkey "gobble". All of them are on the board in the Farm group.
Are these real animal recordings?
No. Every sound is a friendly imitation created by your browser's Web Audio engine from pitch, rhythm and tone shapes that resemble the real call. That keeps the page fast, private and usable offline. Some quiet animals, such as giraffes or kangaroos, use sounds scientists have actually observed, like humming and clicking.
What age is the animal sounds board for?
Toddlers and preschoolers enjoy tapping the big pictures and hearing the names, while the quiz's medium and hard levels challenge older kids with wild, water and bug sounds. Grown-ups often learn something from the fun facts too.
How does the guess-the-sound quiz work?
Each game has 10 rounds. A sound plays and you choose the animal from 3 (easy), 4 (medium) or 6 (hard) pictures. Easy uses only farm animals and pets. You earn up to 3 stars, and your best score for each level is saved on your device.
Why can't I hear anything?
Check that your device is not muted, the volume slider is up, and on iPhone or iPad that the ring/silent switch is off. Browsers only allow sound after you tap the page, so tap an animal again if the first tap was silent.
Does a giraffe make any sound?
Yes, though rarely. Giraffes were long thought to be nearly silent, but researchers recording zoo giraffes at night captured a low humming sound. They can also snort, grunt and hiss.
Is the speech feature private?
Yes. The spoken names use your browser's built-in speech synthesis, and nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. You can switch it off with the checkbox.
