Frequently asked questions
How does the random animal generator choose an animal?
It filters the list by the class and habitat you picked, then chooses with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, so every matching animal has the same chance. With no-repeat mode on, animals already shown are set aside until the whole filtered list has appeared.
How many animals are in the generator?
There are 141 animals, including 66 mammals, 26 birds, 11 reptiles, 11 insects, fish, amphibians, molluscs, crustaceans, arachnids and other invertebrates such as jellyfish and coral.
What can I use a random animal for?
Popular uses include drawing and sculpting prompts, charades and Pictionary, classroom warm-ups, creative writing characters, choosing a mascot or a team name, and quick trivia for kids.
What do the animal classes mean?
Mammals are warm-blooded, have hair and feed their young milk. Birds have feathers and lay eggs. Reptiles have scales and mostly lay eggs on land. Amphibians usually start life in water and later live on land. Fish breathe with gills. Insects have six legs, arachnids have eight, and molluscs and crustaceans are soft-bodied or shelled invertebrates.
Why is an animal listed under only one habitat?
Many animals live in several places. Each animal is filed under the habitat it is most closely associated with, so the filters stay simple and useful.
Are the fun facts accurate?
Each fact was written for this tool and describes well-documented behaviour or biology. Animals vary a lot between species and individuals, so treat the facts as a fun starting point for further reading.
