How kids' sizes are labeled around the world
US: toddler sizes 2T–5T, then kids' sizes 4–16 (girls and boys charts differ slightly; girls add 6X and plus sizes, boys add slim and husky).
UK and Ireland: age ranges such as "5–6 years". Many labels also print the height in cm.
EU (Germany, France, Spain, Scandinavia): height in centimeters, stepping by 6 cm. Some French brands label by age in years ("6 ans") which is close to the UK age.
Letter sizes: kids' XS–XXL vary the most between brands; check the brand's chart when buying letter sizes.

Weight ranges in the calculator are typical values for children of average build; brands publish their own charts, and those always take priority.
Measuring a child for clothes
Height: shoes off, heels against the wall, look straight ahead; mark the top of the head with a book held level. Chest: around the fullest part under the arms. Waist: around the natural waist, at the belly button for little ones. Inseam: from the crotch to the ankle on a pair of pants that fits. Re-measure every few months, as growth spurts make last season's size unreliable.
Frequently asked questions
How do European kids' sizes work?
EU children's sizes are the child's height in centimeters, usually in 6 cm steps: 92, 98, 104, 110, 116, 122, 128 and so on. Each number is the tallest height the garment fits, so EU 116 fits children from about 111 to 116 cm.
How do I convert UK kids' sizes to US?
UK kids' clothes use age ranges. As a rule of thumb the US size is the upper age of the UK range: UK 5–6 years is about US 6, UK 7–8 years is about US 8. Toddler UK 2–3 years matches US 3T.
What is the difference between 4T and size 4?
4T is a toddler size, cut shorter and wider with room for a diaper or training pants. Kids' size 4 is cut longer and slimmer for a child who has stopped wearing diapers. Children around 99–104 cm often fit either.
Should I buy kids' clothes by age or by height?
By height. Size labels are based on height first, then weight, and children of the same age can be two or three sizes apart. Use age only as a rough guide when you can't measure.
What if my child's height and weight give different sizes?
Go with the larger size for comfort, then adjust the waist (many kids' pants have adjustable elastic) or look for slim and plus/husky fits. The converter shows both and picks the bigger one.
How much growing room should I allow?
Children grow roughly 5–7 cm (2–3 in) a year between ages 3 and 10. If you buy for a season ahead, one size up is usually right; more than that tends to be too long in the sleeves and legs.
