How pounds convert to dollars
GBP/USD, nicknamed cable, is one of the oldest and most actively traded exchange rates. It is quoted as US dollars per one pound, so converting pounds to dollars is a straight multiplication:
dollars = pounds × GBP/USD. At 1.3400, £85 = 85 × 1.34 = $113.90. A change of one cent in the rate (from 1.34 to 1.35) changes the result by $10 for every £1,000.
This page uses daily reference rates from the European Central Bank, delivered by the free Frankfurter service. They are mid-market benchmarks, so expect a bank, card or bureau de change to give you somewhat fewer dollars.
US cash for UK visitors
The US dollar is divided into 100 cents. All paper bills are the same size and similar in color, so check the number before you pay.
| Coin or bill | Value | Common name |
|---|---|---|
| 1¢ coin | $0.01 | Penny (no longer minted since 2025, still legal tender) |
| 5¢ coin | $0.05 | Nickel |
| 10¢ coin | $0.10 | Dime (smaller than the nickel) |
| 25¢ coin | $0.25 | Quarter |
| Bills | $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 | "Singles", "fives", "twenties"; $2 bills are rare |
Tips for spending pounds in the US
- Add tax and tip to your budget: a $40 restaurant bill can become about $50 once sales tax and a 20% tip are added.
- Pay in dollars when a card machine offers to charge you in pounds; the merchant's conversion rate is usually worse.
- Use a card without foreign transaction fees, or enter your card's fee in the markup field to see the real cost.
- Keep small bills for tips, as some places still prefer cash for gratuities.
Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 pound in US dollars?
It equals the GBP/USD rate shown in the converter. If GBP/USD is 1.34, then £1 = $1.34, £50 = $67 and £1,000 = $1,340.
How do I convert pounds to dollars?
Multiply pounds by the GBP/USD rate: dollars = pounds × rate. To convert back, divide dollars by the same rate.
Why do US prices look cheaper than they are?
American shelf prices usually exclude sales tax, which is added at checkout and varies by state and city, from 0% up to around 10% combined in some places. UK prices include VAT, so add the local sales tax before comparing.
How much should I tip in the US?
For table service in restaurants, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary, and tips are also expected for taxis, hotel staff and bartenders. Factor this into a converted budget.
Will buying from a US website cost more than the converted price?
Possibly. Goods imported into the UK can carry import VAT and, above certain values, customs duty, plus courier handling fees. Many US retailers collect UK VAT at checkout for smaller orders.
How current is the rate?
The rate is the latest European Central Bank reference rate, published on working days around 16:00 CET. The date shown with the result tells you which day it is from.
