Reading the EUR/USD rate
EUR/USD tells you how many US dollars one euro buys. Because the euro is the base currency of this pair, converting euros to dollars is a single multiplication:
dollars = euros × EUR/USD. At a rate of 1.1600, €75 = 75 × 1.16 = $87.00. A move from 1.16 to 1.17 is called a 100-pip move and adds about $1 for every €100 you convert.
The rate here is the European Central Bank's daily reference rate, which reflects the market around 14:10 CET when it is set and is published around 16:00 CET. It is a neutral benchmark; your bank, card or exchange office will apply its own rate with a margin.
Budgeting in dollars: add sales tax and tips
Visitors from Europe are often surprised that US prices are shown before tax. Sales tax is set by each state and many cities add their own, so the checkout total is higher than the shelf price you converted. Restaurant tips of around 15–20% are also customary for table service.

Getting the most dollars for your euros
Pay in dollars, not euros. If a US card machine or ATM offers to bill you in euros, decline. That conversion is set by the merchant's provider and is usually worse.
Watch the fee field. A 3% markup on €1,000 costs you about 3% of the dollars you receive, the price of a nice dinner.
Compare quotes. Type the rate a money transfer service or exchange office offers into the custom rate field to see how far it is from the reference rate.
Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 euro in US dollars?
It equals the EUR/USD rate shown at the top of the converter. For example, if EUR/USD is 1.16, then €1 = $1.16 and €100 = $116. The rate is updated every ECB working day.
How do I convert euros to dollars by hand?
Multiply the euro amount by the EUR/USD rate: dollars = euros × rate. At 1.16, €450 × 1.16 = $522. To go back, divide dollars by the same rate.
Why is the euro always quoted first against the dollar?
Foreign exchange markets follow a fixed priority order of currencies, and the euro ranks above the US dollar, so the pair is written EUR/USD and quoted as dollars per euro. That makes this page’s main rate the same number you see on financial news.
Why will I pay more than the converted price in a US store?
US price tags usually exclude sales tax, which is added at the register. State rates range from 0% to 7.25%, and local taxes can push the total near 10% in some cities. Add that on top of the converted price.
Should I exchange euros for dollars before my trip?
Changing a small amount for arrival is convenient, but exchange counters usually have wide margins. Cards with no foreign transaction fees and bank ATMs in the US typically give a rate much closer to the reference rate shown here.
When is the EUR to USD rate updated?
The European Central Bank publishes its reference rates around 16:00 CET on working days. The converter shows the date of the rate it uses and keeps the last published rate over weekends and holidays.
