The pattern is simple: from W25 upward, each extra inch of waist adds 2 to the US size, and UK = US + 4, EU = US + 30. Women's plus sizes (14W, 16W…) are cut with more room at the hip and thigh, so use the brand's plus chart above US 16.

Fit tips for buying jeans online
Measure a pair that fits. Lay your best-fitting jeans flat, button them and measure straight across the waistband; double it for the waist. This beats measuring your body because it already includes your preferred ease.
Check the rise. High-rise jeans sit at the natural waist, which is smaller than the hip-level spot where low-rise jeans sit, so the same body may need different W numbers.
Stretch content matters. 1–2% elastane relaxes with wear; consider sizing down a half size. 100% cotton rigid denim shrinks up to 3–5% in a hot wash unless it is pre-shrunk (sanforized).
Hem rather than size up in length. Too-long jeans can be shortened cheaply, but too-short ones can't be fixed.
Frequently asked questions
What does W and L mean on jeans?
W is the waist and L is the length (inseam), both in inches. W32 L30 jeans are made for a 32 inch waist and a 30 inch inside leg. Men's jeans in the US, UK and many European brands use W/L.
What women's size is a 28 waist in jeans?
A 28 inch jeans waist is usually a women's US 6, UK 10 and EU 36, which is a size S. Each inch of waist is roughly one US numeric size (two numbers): W27 is US 4 and W29 is US 8.
How do I convert EU jeans sizes to US?
For women, subtract 30 from the EU size: EU 38 is a US 8. For men's trousers, subtract 16 from the EU size to get the waist in inches: EU 48 is W32 and EU 50 is W34.
How do I measure my jeans size?
Measure your waist where the jeans will sit (for mid- and low-rise jeans this is below the natural waist), keeping the tape snug. For inseam, measure a well-fitting pair from the crotch seam to the bottom of the hem, or measure yourself from the crotch to the ankle bone.
What inseam length should I choose?
For men, 30 is short, 32 regular, 34 long and 36 extra long. For women, around 28–29 is petite, 30–32 regular and 33–34 tall. If you wear jeans cuffed or with heels, adjust by an inch or two.
Why does my jeans size vary between brands?
Vanity sizing, different cuts and the amount of stretch all change the fit. Stretch denim can be worn half to one size smaller than rigid denim, and a W32 label often measures closer to 33 or 34 inches in reality.
