How EU shoe sizes work
The European system measures the shoe last (the form a shoe is built on) in Paris points of 2/3 cm:
last length (cm) = EU size × 2/3
So an EU 39 shoe is built on a 26 cm last and fits a foot of about 24.5–25 cm. Because the scale is continuous and unisex, the same EU number fits the same foot for men, women and kids. The US system instead has three scales (men's, women's and kids' C/Y sizes), which is why one EU size maps to several US numbers.
Tips when buying European shoes
- Italian and French brands often run about half a size small compared with German and Scandinavian brands; check reviews for "runs small".
- Half EU sizes (37.5, 42.5) are less common; if a brand skips them, the next whole size up is usually the safer choice.
- Kids' shoes: leave about 1–1.5 cm of growing room, and re-measure every 2–3 months for toddlers.

EU 42 is about a men's US 8.5 and a women's US 10 on a standard chart, for a foot roughly 26.5 cm (10.4 in) long. Some brands label EU 42 as men's 9.
What is EU 38 in US women's?
EU 38 is about a women's US 7 (men's 5.5), for a foot around 23.5 cm (9.25 in) long. Brands range from 7 to 7.5.
How do I convert EU to US shoe size?
Look the EU size up in a chart, or approximate: men's US ≈ (EU − 31.25) ÷ 1.25, then add 1.5 for women's US. Round to the nearest half size.
Are EU sizes unisex?
Yes. The EU (Paris point) scale is the same for men, women and children; only the US uses separate men's, women's and kids' scales. That's why the same EU number gives two different US numbers.
What does a Paris point mean?
It is 2/3 of a centimeter, the unit of the EU system. EU size × 2/3 gives the length of the shoe last in cm (EU 42 ≈ 28 cm), which is about 1–1.5 cm longer than the foot that fits it.
