How to use the Christmas Budget Calculator
Enter your total holiday budget, your monthly take-home pay (optional) and what you have already saved.
Type your gift list, one person per line, like Mom, 80.
Add other holiday costs: tree and decorations, meals and hosting, travel, cards and wrapping, parties and charity.
Read what is left in your budget, or how far over you are, plus the share of your income.
Use the weekly savings figure to set money aside before Christmas, and download the gift list as CSV.
How the holiday budget is calculated
Total spending = sum of all gifts + decorations + meals + travel + cards & wrapping + parties + charity + other
Left in budget = budget − total spending (a negative result means you are over budget)
Share of income = total spending ÷ monthly take-home pay × 100
Weekly savings needed = (total spending − already saved) ÷ weeks until the pay-by date
Example: $685 of gifts for 9 people and $610 of other costs make $1,295, leaving $105 of a $1,400 budget. With $300 already saved and 10 weeks to go, you need to put aside about $99.50 a week.

Tips for a stress-free holiday budget
Start early. Saving a small amount each week from autumn is easier than one big December hit.
Set a cap per person before you shop, and track what you actually spend against it.
Try a gift swap. A Secret Santa or name draw for adults cuts the number of gifts you buy.
Watch shipping deadlines so you don't pay for express delivery.
Reuse decorations and buy new ones in the after-Christmas sales for next year.
Frequently asked questions
How do I set a Christmas budget?
Start with what you can pay in cash without borrowing: savings set aside plus what you can spare from paychecks before the holidays. Then split it between gifts and other costs like food, travel and decorations, and give each person on your list an amount that fits.
How much should I spend on Christmas?
There is no single right number. A common guideline is to keep total holiday spending to an amount you can cover from savings or one month's spare income, so nothing ends up on a credit card balance. The calculator shows your plan as a percentage of monthly take-home pay to help you judge.
How is the weekly savings amount calculated?
It takes your total planned spending minus what you have already saved, and divides it by the number of weeks left until Christmas Day (or the date you choose). For example, $995 still to save with 10 weeks left means about $99.50 a week.
How do I enter my gift list?
Put one person or group per line with the amount at the end, such as "Dad, 70" or "Teacher gifts 30". The last number on each line is used as the amount, and lines without a number are skipped and reported.
What holiday costs do people forget?
Wrapping paper, shipping and cards, hosting food and drinks, travel costs like gas or parking, holiday outfits, office party gifts, tips for service workers and charity donations are all easy to miss. Add them under the other costs so the total is realistic.
Is my gift list saved?
