The latte factor is the idea that small, frequent purchases add up to a large sum over time. Enter what you spend and how often, and see the yearly cost, the total over the years and what the same money could grow to if you invested it, with a growth chart.

How to use the Latte Factor Calculator
Enter the cost each time and how many you buy per day, workday, week or month.
Optionally add a yearly price increase so the cost rises with inflation.
Choose an investment return and number of years to compare spending with investing.
Read the value if invested, the yearly cost and the total spent.
Check the chart and table to see how the gap grows year by year, or try a preset.
How the latte factor is calculated
Yearly spend = cost each time × times per period × periods per year (365 days, 260 workdays, 52 weeks or 12 months).
The invested value treats one twelfth of that yearly spend as a monthly deposit growing at your chosen return:
FV = PMT × ((1 + r)n − 1) ÷ r
where PMT is the monthly amount, r = (1 + annual return)1/12 − 1 and n is the number of months. With a yearly price increase, the deposit rises each year and the balance is compounded month by month.
Example: $5.50 every workday is $1,430 a year, or $119.17 a month. Invested at 7% a year for 30 years it grows to about $139,000, while the total spent is $42,900.

Making the latte factor work for you
Automate it. Set up an automatic transfer for the amount you cut, so the saving actually happens.
Cut what you don't value and keep what you truly enjoy; the goal is intentional spending, not zero spending.
Look at recurring bills too. Forgotten subscriptions often add up to more than coffee; try the subscription cost calculator.
The latte factor is a term popularized by author David Bach for the small, regular purchases (like a daily café coffee) that seem harmless but add up to a large amount over years. The point is not that coffee is bad, but that redirecting a small daily amount into investments can grow into a meaningful sum through compounding.
How much does a daily coffee cost per year?
Multiply the price by the number of times a year you buy it. A $5.50 coffee every workday (260 days) is $1,430 a year; every day (365 days) it is $2,007.50 a year.
How is the invested value calculated?
Your yearly spend is split into 12 equal monthly deposits that earn the annual return you enter, compounded monthly at r = (1 + annual return)^(1/12) − 1. With no price increase this equals the annuity formula FV = PMT × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r. It assumes a steady return; real investments go up and down.
What return should I use?
That depends on how you would invest. Cash savings may earn a few percent; a diversified stock index fund has historically averaged more over long periods but with large swings. Use a lower number to be conservative, or subtract about 2–3% to see the result in today's money after inflation.
Is it better to cut the habit completely?
Not necessarily. Many people keep the habits they value most and cut the ones they don't really enjoy. The calculator shows what cutting the habit in half would grow to, which is often a good compromise.
