Rent Split Calculator
Split rent fairly between 2 to 6 roommates: equally, by bedroom size, or in proportion to income. A shared-space weighting makes everyone pay equally for the common areas, and utilities are divided evenly.
Split equally between everyone.
How to use the Rent Split Calculator
- Enter the monthly rent and any shared bills such as utilities and internet.
- Pick a split method: equal, by room size or by income.
- Choose the number of roommates and enter names plus room sizes or incomes.
- Set the shared space weighting: the share of rent everyone pays equally for common areas.
- Read each person's total, then copy the results to share.
How the rent split is calculated
Equal split: each person pays rent ÷ number of roommates.
By room size or income: the rent is divided into two parts.
- Shared part = rent × shared space weighting, split equally, because everyone uses the kitchen, living room and hallways.
- Private part = the rest of the rent, split in proportion to each person's room size (or income): share = private part × your size ÷ total size.
Example: $3,000 rent, rooms of 180, 140 and 120 sq ft and 40% shared. The shared $1,200 is $400 each; the private $1,800 is split 180 : 140 : 120. Totals: $1,136.36, $972.73 and $890.91. With 0% shared (pure room size), the same rooms would pay $1,227.27, $954.55 and $818.18.
Choosing a fair method
| Method | Works best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Equal | Rooms are similar in size and features | Feels unfair when one room is much bigger or has a private bathroom |
| Room size + shared weighting | Bedrooms differ in size; common areas are shared by all | Size is not everything: add a few square feet for a private bath, closet or balcony |
| Income | Couples or friends with very different incomes who agree to pay proportionally | Everyone should agree; incomes change, so revisit the split |
A shared space weighting of 30% to 50% is a common compromise: the bigger room pays more, but not so much more that common areas are effectively paid for by one person. Utilities and internet are split equally here; agree separately on anything used unevenly.
Frequently asked questions
How do you split rent fairly by room size?
Divide the rent into a shared part for common areas (split equally) and a private part split in proportion to bedroom size. With 40% shared, a $3,000 rent and rooms of 180, 140 and 120 sq ft, the roommates pay about $1,136, $973 and $891.
What shared space percentage should we use?
There is no single rule. 30% to 50% is a common choice: it reflects that everyone uses the kitchen and living room equally. Use 0% to split purely by bedroom size, or 100% for an equal split.
How do you split rent by income?
Each person pays rent × their income ÷ total income. A couple earning $60,000 and $40,000 would pay 60% and 40%. Add a shared percentage if you want part of the rent split equally.
How should we handle a room with a private bathroom?
Add the bathroom's area to that person's room size, or add an agreed number of square feet for the extra benefit. The same works for a balcony or a walk-in closet.
Are utilities split the same way?
In this calculator utilities are split equally, since usage is usually similar. If one person uses much more (for example, working from home all day), agree on an adjustment.
Can I split rent between more than 6 people?
The calculator supports up to 6 roommates. For larger households, group people into rooms or split the rent in stages.
