How to use the Christmas Gift Tracker
- Name your list (for example Christmas 2026) and choose your currency.
- Add each person with the amount you want to spend on them.
- Add gift ideas and their prices under each person. Edit names and prices right in the list.
- Tick Bought when you buy a gift and Wrapped once it is wrapped; spending totals update instantly.
- Use the filters to see what is left to buy or wrap, copy your shopping list, or download a CSV or printout.
How the totals work

Tips for stress-free gift shopping
- Set the budget before the ideas. Deciding the amount per person first keeps one exciting idea from blowing the whole plan.
- Write ideas down all year. Add a gift the moment someone mentions something they want, even in July, and leave the price as an estimate.
- Use the planned total as an early warning. If it is above your budget, swap or drop ideas now rather than at the checkout.
- Include shipping and gift wrap. Put the full delivered price in the price field so the totals match your bank statement.
- Do a wrapping night. Switch to the To wrap filter to see every gift that is bought but not yet wrapped.
- Remember small gifts. Teachers, neighbors, mail carriers and office swaps add up; give them a line (or a shared "Small gifts" person) so they are counted.
Frequently asked questions
How is the amount spent calculated?
Only gifts marked Bought count as spent. The planned total adds up every gift on the list, bought or not, so you can compare your plan with your budget before you shop. Left to spend is each budget minus what is already spent.
What happens if I go over budget?
The person's line turns red and shows how much over budget you are, and the overall Left to spend card switches to Over budget. If your planned gifts add up to more than the budget but you have not bought them yet, you see an orange plan exceeds budget warning instead.
Can the people on my list see it?
No. The list is stored only in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. That also means it will not sync to your phone automatically; download the CSV or print the list if you want it elsewhere.
Will my list still be there tomorrow?
Yes, it saves automatically after every change and reloads when you come back in the same browser. Clearing your browsing data or using a private window removes it, so keep a CSV backup for long lists.
Does wrapping a gift mark it as bought?
Yes. Ticking Wrapped also ticks Bought, since you can only wrap something you have. Unticking Bought also clears Wrapped.
How much should I budget per person for Christmas?
There is no single right number. A common approach is to start from the total you can afford without borrowing, subtract food, decorations and travel, then split what is left by person. The Christmas Budget Calculator can help you set that overall total first.
Can I use it for birthdays or other holidays?
Yes. Rename the list to anything you like, such as Hanukkah, Birthdays 2026 or Wedding gifts. The day counter always shows days until Christmas, but every other feature works for any occasion.
