How to use the 100 Envelope Challenge
Choose your plan: the classic $1 × envelope number saves $5,050; $0.50 saves $2,525 and $2 saves $10,100. Use Custom for any other multiplier.
Set the start date and pace to see your target finish date and roughly how much you'll save each week.
Press Pick a random envelope. The picker lands on an envelope you haven't filled yet. On a tight week, enter a budget limit first.
Put the money in, then press Mark as filled, or tap any envelope in the grid.
Print the chart to cross off on paper, or download the CSV as a backup.
How the 100 envelope challenge adds up
Envelope n holds n × multiplier. The sum of the whole numbers 1 to 100 is 100 × 101 ÷ 2 = 5,050, so the challenge total is always 5,050 × the multiplier, and the average envelope holds 50.5 × the multiplier.

Tips to finish the challenge
Mix big and small. If you pull a big envelope one day, use the budget limit to pick a small one next time.
Front-load when you can. In a month with extra income (a tax refund, a bonus), knock out a few of the $80–$100 envelopes.
Deposit regularly. Move the cash into a savings account every week or two. The envelopes stay as your scoreboard.
Pick a pace that fits your income. At 2 envelopes a week the average is about $101 a week. If that's too much, choose the half plan or a slower pace instead of quitting.
Give the money a job. An emergency fund, a holiday budget or a down payment is more motivating than “just saving”.
Frequently asked questions
How much do you save with the 100 envelope challenge?
With $1 per envelope number you save 1 + 2 + … + 100 = 100 × 101 ÷ 2 = $5,050. The total is always 5,050 × your multiplier: $2,525 for the half challenge ($0.50) and $10,100 for the double challenge ($2).
How long does the 100 envelope challenge take?
The original version fills one envelope a day and finishes in 100 days, which averages $50.50 a day. Many people slow it down to two envelopes a week (50 weeks, about $101 a week) or spread it over a whole year (about $97 a week). Choose a pace in the tool to see your finish date.
Do I have to fill the envelopes in order?
No. Picking envelopes at random keeps the challenge interesting and mixes cheap and expensive days. The total is the same in any order. The budget limit option lets you draw only small envelopes in weeks when money is tight.
Is it safe to keep $5,050 in cash envelopes?
Large amounts of cash at home can be lost, stolen or damaged. Many people use the envelopes as a tracker and move the money to a separate savings account each time, or deposit the cash every few weeks. That way it is protected and may also earn interest.
What is a good easier version?
Try the half challenge ($0.50 × envelope number, $2,525 total), or do only envelopes 1 to 50 (a total of $1,275 with the $1 plan). You can also set a slower pace such as one envelope a week.
Where is my progress saved?
Your filled envelopes, dates and settings are stored in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Clearing browser data resets the tracker, so download the CSV now and then as a backup.
