Remove em dashes (—) from any text by turning them into commas, hyphens, semicolons, colons or new sentences, with the spacing fixed automatically. En dashes in ranges like 12–18 become simple hyphens, and ellipses, odd dashes and invisible characters can be cleaned up at the same time.

Choosing the right punctuation
Aside in the middle of a sentence: “The draft—which I finished last night—needs work.” → commas: “The draft, which I finished last night, needs work.”
Explanation or list after the dash: “You need one thing—patience.” → colon: “You need one thing: patience.”
Two complete sentences joined by a dash: “It rained—we stayed in.” → semicolon or period: “It rained; we stayed in.”
Attribution at the start of a line: “—Anonymous” → the dash is dropped or becomes “- ”.
Style guides differ on spacing: many US guides (such as Chicago and APA) close up the em dash (word—word), while AP style and many UK publishers put a space on each side. The “Closed em dash” and “Spaced em dash” options let you make the spacing consistent without removing the dashes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an em dash, an en dash and a hyphen?
A hyphen (-) joins words such as well-known. An en dash (–), about the width of the letter n, marks ranges like 2019–2023 or pages 12–18. An em dash (—), the width of the letter m, sets off an aside or a sudden break in a sentence. Many keyboards only have the hyphen, which is why fancy dashes cause trouble in plain-text systems.
What should I replace an em dash with?
It depends on the job the dash was doing. Paired dashes around an aside work well as commas (or parentheses). A dash that introduces an explanation or list often reads best as a colon. A dash joining two complete thoughts can become a semicolon or a period. A spaced hyphen keeps the look of a dash in plain ASCII text.
Why do people remove em dashes from AI-written text?
Chatbots tend to use em dashes much more often than most people do, so heavy dash use has become a tell-tale sign of generated text. Replacing them with ordinary punctuation, and then reading the result, makes writing sound more like your own. It is still worth editing the wording, not just the punctuation.
Does it break number ranges?
No. With the smart setting, an en dash between two numbers (12–18, 2019–2023, 9–5) or two day or month names (Mon–Fri) becomes a hyphen, or the word “to” if you tick that option, instead of a comma.
Will it change hyphens inside words?
No. Normal hyphens in words like up-to-date are never touched. Only double and triple hyphens (-- and ---) are treated as em dashes, and you can switch that off for code or command-line text.
What does “Clean other dashes, non-breaking and zero-width characters” do?
It converts look-alike characters to plain ones: the minus sign (−), figure dash (‒), non-breaking hyphen (‑) and similar become a hyphen; non-breaking and thin spaces become normal spaces; zero-width spaces, joiners and soft hyphens are deleted; and bullet symbols at the start of a line become a hyphen.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. All replacements run in your browser with JavaScript; nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.
