Repeat purchase formulas
Repeat customer rate = customers with 2+ orders ÷ total customers × 100
Purchase frequency = total orders ÷ unique customers
Time between purchases ≈ days in period ÷ purchase frequency
Orders from repeat customers = total orders − one-time customers
Orders per repeat customer = repeat orders ÷ repeat customers
Example for one year: 2,400 customers, 600 of them bought twice or more, 3,500 orders. Repeat rate = 600 ÷ 2,400 = 25%. Purchase frequency = 3,500 ÷ 2,400 = 1.46. Time between purchases ≈ 365 ÷ 1.46 = 250 days. The 1,800 one-time customers placed 1,800 orders, so the 600 repeat customers placed 1,700 orders, about 2.83 each, or one every 129 days.

Ways to improve repeat purchases
Time your follow-ups to the average days between purchases: a reminder shortly before customers usually reorder is more useful than a generic newsletter.
Make the first order great: fast delivery, good packaging and easy support are what bring most second orders.
Offer replenishment or subscriptions for consumable products.
Reward the second purchase, since the jump from one to two orders is usually the hardest.
Compare cohorts (customers acquired in the same month) to see whether changes actually lift the repeat rate.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate repeat purchase rate?
Repeat customer rate = customers who ordered more than once ÷ total customers × 100, over the same period. With 600 repeat customers out of 2,400, the rate is 25%. Some tools call this the repeat purchase rate or returning customer rate.
How is purchase frequency calculated?
Purchase frequency = total orders ÷ unique customers in the period. 3,500 orders from 2,400 customers gives 1.46 orders per customer for the year.
How do you calculate time between purchases?
A common approximation is days in the period ÷ purchase frequency. Over 365 days at 1.46 orders per customer, that is about 250 days. Repeat buyers alone order much more often, so the calculator also shows days per order for them.
How does the calculator find orders from repeat customers?
Every one-time customer placed exactly one order, so repeat orders = total orders − one-time customers. In the example, 3,500 − 1,800 = 1,700 orders came from 600 repeat customers, about 2.83 each.
What period should I use?
Use a period that fits how often people buy your product: 30 to 90 days for consumables like coffee or pet food, a full year for most online stores, and longer for rarely bought items like furniture. Short periods understate repeat rates for slow-moving products.
How is this different from retention rate?
Repeat rate looks at customers within one period and asks whether they bought more than once. Retention rate compares two periods and asks how many customers from the start of a period are still active at the end. Both are useful; they answer different questions.
