Fixed-date holidays that fall on a Sunday are observed on Monday. When one falls on a Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks stay open on the Friday before, which is different from the federal government, where employees get that Friday off. That is why some years have only 10 bank closures.
How holidays affect deposit and payment timing
Direct deposit: if payday lands on a weekend or bank holiday, most employers send pay to arrive on the previous business day.
Bills and transfers: ACH debits and transfers scheduled for a holiday usually process on the next business day, so pay a day or two early if a due date falls on a holiday.
Check deposits: a check deposited on Saturday, Sunday or a holiday counts as received the next business day; holds are counted in business days from then.
Wires: Fedwire is closed on Fed holidays, so a domestic wire sent that day goes out the next business day.
Long weekends: a deposit made on the Friday evening before a Monday holiday may not be processed until Tuesday.
Bank holidays vs other calendars
Federal employees, stock exchanges and banks each follow their own schedule. For the full list of federal holidays and observances use the US Holidays Calendar; for trading days see Stock Market Hours.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Federal Reserve bank holidays?
New Year’s Day, Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. (third Monday in January), Washington’s Birthday (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (first Monday in September), Columbus Day (second Monday in October), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas Day (December 25).
What happens when a bank holiday falls on a weekend?
If it falls on a Sunday, Federal Reserve Banks close the following Monday. If it falls on a Saturday, the Fed does not move it: the Reserve Banks are open on the Friday before, so most banks process payments as usual that Friday.
Are banks open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day?
Federal Reserve Banks are closed, so ACH and wire transfers do not settle. Some banks keep branches open for deposits and withdrawals, but transactions are generally processed on the next business day.
Do ACH payments and direct deposits process on bank holidays?
No. The Fed’s ACH and wire systems do not settle on Fed holidays or weekends. Employers usually send payroll so that it arrives on the business day before a holiday payday, and other payments move to the next business day.
When was Juneteenth added as a bank holiday?
Juneteenth National Independence Day became a federal holiday in June 2021, and Federal Reserve Banks first closed for it in 2022. In 2021 the Fed remained open on June 18.
How long until a deposit made on a holiday is available?
A deposit made on a weekend or holiday counts as received on the next business day. Under federal funds-availability rules, electronic payments and cash deposited in person are generally available by the next business day, and most checks by the second business day, though larger deposits or new accounts can be held longer. Use the business-days field to project the date.
Is the stock market closed on bank holidays?
Not always. US stock exchanges keep a different calendar: they are usually open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and they close on Good Friday, which is not a bank holiday.
