Upwork fee formulas
Service fee = contract amount × freelancer service fee % (10% by default here)
Net earnings = contract amount − service fee − withdrawal fee
Amount to bill for a target net = (target + withdrawal fee) ÷ (1 − fee %)
Hourly rate to bill = amount to bill ÷ hours
Example: to take home $2,000 with a 10% fee and a $0.99 withdrawal, bill ($2,000 + $0.99) ÷ 0.90 = $2,223.33. The fee is $222.33.

Raising your price by the fee percentage is not enough: adding 10% to $1,000 gives $1,100, which nets $990. Divide by 0.90 instead. Withdrawing less often reduces the total of fixed withdrawal fees.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Upwork take from freelancers?
Upwork has charged freelancers a flat 10% service fee on earnings, and has announced variable fees for some contracts. The fee for each contract is shown in Upwork; enter it here. On a $1,000 contract at 10% you receive $900 before withdrawal fees.
How do I set my rate to cover the Upwork fee?
Divide the amount you want by one minus the fee. At 10%, to net $50 per hour you bill $50 ÷ 0.90 = $55.56 per hour.
Are there fees to withdraw money from Upwork?
Yes, depending on the method. Direct transfer to a US bank has typically cost $0.99 per withdrawal, while wire transfers and some other methods cost more. Enter your method's fee.
Do clients also pay a fee on Upwork?
Yes. Clients pay a separate marketplace fee on top of the contract amount. Enter it in the optional field to see the client's total; it does not reduce your earnings.
Are Upwork fees tax deductible?
In many countries platform fees are a business expense for self-employed people. Keep your Upwork transaction history and ask a tax professional how it applies to you.
Is this calculator made by Upwork?
No. It is an independent estimate that runs in your browser. Upwork sets its own fees and may change them.
