Work out what your scrap gold is worth. Enter the weight, the karat stamped on the piece and today's spot price to get the melt value of the pure gold it contains, plus an estimate of what a buyer paying a percentage of melt would offer. Price a whole mixed lot at once if you have several karats.

How to use the Gold Value Calculator
Weigh the gold on a scale that reads to 0.1 g or better. Remove stones where possible, as they add weight but no gold.
Find the karat stamp (14K, 18K, 585, 750…) and choose it, or pick Custom purity and enter the stamp divided by 10.
Enter today's spot price per troy ounce from a live quote.
Set the payout percentage the buyer offers to see the cash you can expect.
Several pieces? Switch to Mixed lot and enter one item per line, such as 14K 7.5 g chain.
Gold melt value formula
Scrap gold is valued by the amount of pure gold it contains:
Pure gold (g) = weight in grams × karat ÷ 24
Price per gram = spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768
Melt value = pure gold (g) × price per gram
Dealer payout = melt value × payout %
Example: an 18K ring weighing 5 dwt is 5 × 1.55517 = 7.776 g. At 75% purity it holds 5.832 g of pure gold. With spot at $4,000 per troy ounce ($128.60 per gram) the melt value is $750.00 (5 dwt is exactly 0.25 troy oz); a buyer paying 80% would offer $600.

Tips before you sell gold
Sort by karat and weigh each group separately, so 10K pieces are not priced at 14K or the other way round.
Know your weight in grams and dwt. Buyers often quote per dwt, so use the table above to compare their price with melt value.
Check the stamp for plating marks such as GF, GP or HGE: those items are not solid gold.
Get several written offers. The payout percentage is the main thing that differs between buyers.
Collectible or designer pieces and gold coins can be worth more than melt; consider selling them as items rather than scrap.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the value of scrap gold?
Melt value = weight in grams × (karat ÷ 24) × (spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035). For example, 10 g of 14K gold at a $4,000 spot price contains 10 × 0.5833 = 5.833 g of pure gold, worth 5.833 × $128.60 = about $750.
What is a troy ounce and a pennyweight?
Precious metals are priced in troy ounces. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, about 10% heavier than a regular (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 g. A pennyweight (dwt) is 1/20 of a troy ounce, or 1.555 g, and is common in the jewelry trade.
How pure is 10K, 14K and 18K gold?
Karat is parts of gold out of 24. 10K is 10/24 = 41.67% gold, 14K is 58.33%, 18K is 75%, 22K is 91.67% and 24K is essentially pure (99.9% or more). European hallmarks give the same purity in parts per thousand: 417, 585, 750, 916 and 999.
Why will a buyer pay less than the melt value?
Melt value is what the pure gold would be worth at spot. Buyers must assay, refine and resell the metal and make a profit, so they pay a percentage of melt. The percentage varies widely between buyers and by the size of the lot, so it pays to compare written quotes.
Does the weight of stones count?
No. Gemstones, enamel, springs in clasps and steel inserts add weight without adding gold. Buyers deduct them, so remove stones or estimate their weight and subtract it before calculating.
Is gold-plated or gold-filled jewelry worth its weight?
No. Plated, vermeil and gold-filled items (stamped GP, GEP, HGE, RGP or 1/20 12K GF) contain only a thin layer of gold. Their scrap value is a small fraction of solid gold of the same weight, and this calculator assumes solid gold.
Where does the spot price come from?
The spot price is the current market price for one troy ounce of pure gold for immediate delivery, quoted by precious-metals markets and dealers and updated continuously. It changes every trading minute, so enter the live figure at the time you sell.
