How to use the Resale Profit Calculator
Enter the buy price and sale price of the item, plus any shipping the buyer paid.
Enter platform fees: a percentage and any fixed fee per order. Use a preset as a starting point and check your marketplace's current fee page.
Add payment processing if the platform charges it separately.
Add your shipping label, supplies and other costs, and how many identical items you are selling.
Press Calculate to see profit, margin, ROI, break-even price and the max buy price for your target ROI.
Resale profit formulas
Revenue = sale price + shipping paid by the buyer
Fees = fee base × (platform % + payment %) + fixed fees, where the fee base is the sale price or the sale price plus shipping
Profit = revenue − buy price − fees − your shipping − supplies − other costs
Margin = profit ÷ revenue · ROI = profit ÷ (buy price + shipping, supplies and other costs you paid)
Max buy price for a target ROI = (revenue − fees − costs − costs × target) ÷ (1 + target)
Example: a jacket bought for $12 sells for $55 with free shipping. A 13.25% fee plus $0.40 comes to $7.69. After an $8.50 label and $1 of supplies, profit is 55 − 12 − 7.69 − 9.50 = $25.81: a 46.9% margin and 120% ROI on the $21.50 spent.

Fixed per-order fees hurt cheap items the most: 40 cents is 4% of a $10 sale but less than 0.2% of a $250 one. Fee levels shown are examples only; marketplaces change their rates and many vary by category.
Tips for profitable flipping
Check sold listings, not asking prices, to set a realistic sale price before you buy.
Use the max buy price while sourcing so you know your walk-away price on the spot.
Weigh and measure before listing so the shipping you charge covers the label.
Count your time. Divide profit by the minutes spent sourcing, cleaning, photographing and shipping to compare item types.
Keep records of purchase prices and fees; resale profit is usually taxable income.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate resale profit?
Profit = sale price + shipping paid by the buyer − buy price − platform fees − payment fees − your shipping cost − supplies and other costs. Fees are usually a percentage of the sale (sometimes including shipping) plus a fixed amount per order.
What is the difference between margin and ROI for flipping?
Margin = profit ÷ sale revenue, so it shows how much of each sale you keep. ROI = profit ÷ what you spent (buy price + supplies and other costs you paid), so it shows the return on your money. A $10 item sold with $20 profit has a 200% ROI even if the margin is only 50%.
What is a good ROI for reselling?
Many resellers aim for a profit of at least two to three times the buy price on low-cost thrift items, because each listing takes time. Higher-priced items such as electronics often sell at lower ROI but higher dollar profit. Set the target ROI to your own rule.
Do marketplace fees apply to shipping?
On some platforms, yes. For example, eBay calculates its final value fee on the total amount of the sale, including shipping and sales tax. Tick the option to charge fees on buyer-paid shipping when your platform works this way.
Are the preset fees current?
The presets are examples based on commonly published standard rates in 2025 and may not match your category, store level or country. Always confirm the fee schedule on the marketplace's own help pages and edit the fields.
How do I find the most I should pay for an item?
Enter the expected sale price, fees and costs and your target ROI. The calculator works backwards to the maximum buy price that still reaches that ROI, which is useful while sourcing in a store.
