Tips for an accurate comparison
Measure barefoot, standing straight against a wall with heels together, and mark the top of the head with a flat object such as a book.
Measure in the morning. People are typically about 1 cm (around half an inch) taller after a night's sleep, because the spinal discs compress during the day.
Shoes add height: everyday sneakers add roughly 2–3 cm (about 1 inch). Use the same footwear for everyone in the chart.
Use half inches or one decimal place in centimetres when two people are close in height.
Frequently asked questions
Are the silhouettes really to scale?
Yes. Every figure is drawn with the same pixels-per-centimetre scale, from the ground line to the top of the head, so a person 10% taller is drawn exactly 10% taller. Figure widths are stylised and do not represent body build.
How do I convert feet and inches to centimetres?
Multiply the total inches by 2.54. For example 5 ft 10 in is 5 × 12 + 10 = 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm. To go back, divide centimetres by 2.54 to get inches, then divide by 12 for feet.
What is the average height in the US?
According to CDC NHANES data for 2015–2018, the average height of adults aged 20 and over is about 175.3 cm (5 ft 9 in) for men and 161.3 cm (5 ft 3.5 in) for women. These values are available as reference figures in the chart.
How is the height difference shown?
The summary under the chart gives the difference between the tallest and shortest person in inches (or ft/in when it is a foot or more) or in centimetres, and the percentage by which the tallest is taller. It also compares the first two people in the list.
Can I compare fictional characters or celebrities?
Yes. Type any name and height. Published heights of celebrities and characters vary between sources, so double-check the numbers you enter.
Is my chart saved?
The chart is kept in your browser's local storage on this device and is also encoded in the page address, so Copy share link lets someone else open the same chart. Nothing is sent to a server.
