How the sounds are made
Instead of playing recorded clips, this soundboard builds each effect with the browser's Web Audio API, so the page loads instantly and every sound is original. A few building blocks cover everything:
- Noise bursts (random samples with a fast exponential decay) make claps, snare hits and cymbals. Applause is about 140 short claps per channel scattered over four seconds, filtered to the 0.5–4 kHz range where hand claps live.
- Sawtooth oscillators through a low-pass filter imitate brass: the filter opens quickly at the start of each note, like a player's breath. That gives the ta-da, fanfare, air horn and sad trombone.
- Sine waves with inharmonic overtones (about 2×, 3× and 4.2× the base pitch) decay like struck metal for the ding, doorbell, ka-ching and gong.
- Pitch sweeps and vibrato (an oscillator wiggling another oscillator's pitch) create the boing, slide whistle and the wobbly last note of the sad trombone.
Tips for using sound effects live
- Keep this page in its own browser window so the shortcuts work without switching tabs, and click once on the page so it has keyboard focus.
- Set the volume before the event; the master compressor keeps overlapping sounds from distorting.
- For videos, download the WAV files and drop them into your editor so the timing is exact.
- Pair it with the game show buzzer and online scoreboard for a complete quiz night.
Frequently asked questions
Are these sound effects free to use?
Yes. Every sound is generated by code on this page from oscillators and noise, not copied from recordings, so you can use the sounds and the WAV downloads freely in videos, presentations, streams and games.
Why is there no sound on my phone?
Phones only allow web audio after a tap, so the first press unlocks it. Also check that the ringer or silent switch and media volume are up, and that the browser tab is not muted.
Can I play several sounds at once?
Yes. By default sounds overlap, so you can start a drumroll and finish with a ta-da. Tick One at a time if you want each new sound to stop the previous one.
Which keys trigger the sounds?
The first ten buttons use the number keys 1 to 9 and 0, and the next eight use Q, W, E, R, T, Y, U and I. Esc stops all sounds. Shortcuts are ignored while you type in a text field.
Can I use the soundboard in OBS, Zoom or Google Meet?
Sounds play through your computer speakers. To send them into a call or stream, share your computer audio in the meeting app, capture the browser tab in OBS, or download the WAV files and load them into your streaming software.
How long are the sounds?
Most effects last between half a second and four seconds. Applause and crickets run about four seconds; press the button again to extend them.
