How to use the Round Robin Generator
- List your entrants, one team or player per line. Use Shuffle order for a random draw.
- Choose the format: single round robin (everyone meets once) or double round robin (everyone meets twice, home and away).
- Add details if you like: the date of round 1, days between rounds, and the number of courts or fields.
- Press Generate schedule and browse it by round, by team or as a grid.
- Enter scores as games are played; the Standings tab ranks everyone by points.
- Print or download the schedule as CSV, or copy it as text to share in a group chat or email.
Round robin rounds and games by number of entrants
In a round robin every entrant plays every other entrant. The number of games is the number of distinct pairs, N × (N − 1) ÷ 2. An even field needs N − 1 rounds with everyone playing each round; an odd field needs N rounds because one entrant rests (has a bye) each round. Use this table to check how long your league or event will run before you pick a format.
| Entrants | Rounds (single) | Games per round | Total games (single) | Total games (double) | Games per entrant (single) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 1 + bye | 3 | 6 | 2 |
| 4 | 3 | 2 | 6 | 12 | 3 |
| 5 | 5 | 2 + bye | 10 | 20 | 4 |
| 6 | 5 | 3 | 15 | 30 | 5 |
| 7 | 7 | 3 + bye | 21 | 42 | 6 |
| 8 | 7 | 4 | 28 | 56 | 7 |
| 10 | 9 | 5 | 45 | 90 | 9 |
| 12 | 11 | 6 | 66 | 132 | 11 |
| 16 | 15 | 8 | 120 | 240 | 15 |
| 20 | 19 | 10 | 190 | 380 | 19 |
How the circle method builds a fair schedule
Picture the entrants seated around a table with one seat fixed at the head. In each round, the fixed entrant plays the person opposite, and everyone else plays the person directly across from them. Then every entrant except the fixed one moves one seat clockwise. After N − 1 moves every pair has sat opposite each other exactly once, so no game is repeated and none is missed. For an odd field the fixed seat is an empty chair: whoever faces it has the bye.
To keep home and away fair, the tool alternates which side of each table pairing is listed first. The result is that every entrant gets a near-equal split of home and away games and almost everyone strictly alternates home, away, home, away. For a double round robin the same rounds are replayed with home and away swapped.
Tips for running a round robin
- Too many games? With more than about 10 entrants, split them into groups (pools) of 4 to 6, play a round robin in each group, and send the top finishers to a knockout bracket.
- Short on courts? Enter your number of courts. Games that do not fit go into extra time slots, so you can see at a glance how long each round will take.
- Doubles and pickleball socials: list each fixed pair as one entrant ("Sam & Alex") so pairs play every other pair.
- Agree the tiebreakers first. Common choices are points, then score difference, then head-to-head. Decide before the first game so there are no arguments at the end.
- Dropouts: if an entrant withdraws mid-way, the simplest fair fix is to treat their remaining games as byes for their opponents and void or keep their completed results by an agreed rule.
Frequently asked questions
How many rounds and games does a round robin need?
With N entrants a single round robin has N × (N − 1) / 2 games. If N is even it takes N − 1 rounds with N / 2 games per round; if N is odd it takes N rounds, and one entrant has a bye in each round. A double round robin doubles both numbers.
How are byes handled with an odd number of teams?
The generator adds an invisible placeholder called BYE so the count is even. Whoever is paired with BYE sits out that round. Every entrant gets exactly one bye in a single round robin and two in a double round robin, and no one ever has two byes in a row within a leg.
What algorithm does this round robin generator use?
It uses the circle method, also known as the Berger table: one entrant stays fixed while the others rotate one position each round. Home and away are alternated so that every entrant hosts either floor((N−1)/2) or ceil((N−1)/2) games, and only the minimum possible number of entrants ever play two home or two away games in a row.
What is a double round robin?
In a double round robin every pair meets twice. The second half of the schedule repeats the first half in the same order with home and away swapped, so each pairing has one home game for each side. Most sports leagues use this format.
How are courts or fields assigned?
If you enter a number of courts, the games of each round are spread across them. When a round has more games than courts, the extra games go into a second (or third) time slot, shown as S2, S3 and so on next to the field number.
How is the standings table sorted?
By points first (choose 3-1-0, 2-1-0, chess style 1-½-0 or wins only), then by score difference, then by points scored, then by number of wins. If you need head-to-head as a tiebreaker, check the Grid and By team views to compare the two entrants' games.
Can I open the schedule in Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Download CSV gives one row per game with round, leg, date, field, slot, both entrants and any scores you have entered. Byes are included as their own rows so nothing is lost when you sort or filter.
