How to use the Speedcube Timer

  1. Choose the puzzle (2x2 to 7x7). A scramble and a preview of the scrambled cube appear.
  2. Scramble your cube holding it with white on top and green in front, applying the moves from left to right.
  3. Hold Space (or touch and hold the timer) until the time turns green, then release to start. With inspection on, tap once to start the 15-second countdown first.
  4. Press any key (or tap the timer) the moment you finish. The time is saved and a new scramble is generated.
  5. Check your averages and use +2, DNF or ✕ on any solve to correct it. Download CSV keeps a copy of the session.

Scramble length and notation by puzzle

PuzzleMoves in this scrambleMove types usedExample moves
2x2x211R, U, F faces only (the other three are equivalent on a 2x2)R U' F2
3x3x325All six facesD2 L' B R2
4x4x440Outer faces and two-layer wide turnsRw U2 Fw' L
5x5x560Outer faces and two-layer wide turnsUw2 B Lw' D
6x6x680Outer faces, wide turns and three-layer turns3Rw Fw2 D' 3Uw
7x7x7100Outer faces, wide turns and three-layer turns3Fw' Lw U2 3Bw2

The generator never turns the same layer twice in a row and avoids sequences like R L R that would cancel into fewer moves, so every move in the scramble changes the cube. Always scramble with white on top and green in front; the preview shows what the cube should look like when you are done, so you can check that you applied it correctly.

Reading your statistics

StatSolves usedHow it is calculated
mo3Last 3Plain mean of all three; any DNF makes it DNF
ao5Last 5Drop best and worst, average the middle 3 (official WCA format)
ao12Last 12Drop best and worst, average the middle 10
ao50Last 50Drop 3 best and 3 worst, average 44
ao100Last 100Drop 5 best and 5 worst, average 90
MeanWhole sessionAverage of every solve that is not a DNF

Example: times of 12.10, 14.52, 11.87, 13.40 and DNF give an ao5 of 13.34. The DNF is dropped as the worst result, 11.87 is dropped as the best, and (12.10 + 14.52 + 13.40) ÷ 3 = 13.34.

Practice tips for faster solves

  • Use inspection on purpose. Plan the cross (or the first block) during the 15 seconds, then try to predict the first pair before you start.
  • Watch ao12, not singles. A lucky single says little; a falling ao12 and ao100 show real progress.
  • Slow down to speed up. Solving at a pace where you never pause to look for pieces usually beats fast turning with long pauses.
  • Keep sessions separate. Each puzzle size has its own history here, so 3x3 averages are not mixed with 4x4 times.
  • Be honest with penalties. Mark +2 if the cube was one move from solved when you stopped the timer, matching how a judge would rule.

Frequently asked questions

How are ao5 and ao12 calculated?

An average of 5 (ao5) takes your last five solves, removes the fastest and the slowest, and averages the middle three. This is how official WCA averages are calculated. ao12 removes the single best and worst of twelve and averages the other ten; ao50 and ao100 remove 5% from each end (3 and 5 solves). A DNF counts as the slowest result, so one DNF is dropped, but two DNFs in an ao5 make the average a DNF.

How does WCA inspection work?

In competition you get 15 seconds to look at the scrambled cube before starting. Judges call out at 8 and 12 seconds. Starting after 15 seconds but before 17 seconds adds a 2-second penalty, and going past 17 seconds is a DNF (did not finish). With inspection turned on, this timer counts down, beeps at 8 and 12 seconds and applies those penalties automatically.

What does the scramble notation mean?

Each letter turns one face a quarter turn clockwise as you look at that face: U (up), D (down), R (right), L (left), F (front), B (back). An apostrophe (R') means counter-clockwise, and 2 (R2) means a half turn. On bigger cubes, w means a wide turn of the outer two layers (Rw), and a number in front gives how many layers turn together (3Rw turns three).

Are these official WCA scrambles?

They use official WCA notation and orientation, but they are random-move scrambles (11 moves for 2x2, 25 for 3x3, 40 for 4x4, 60 for 5x5, 80 for 6x6 and 100 for 7x7). Official competitions use the TNoodle program, which generates random-state scrambles for 2x2 to 4x4 and random-move scrambles of 60, 80 and 100 moves for 5x5 to 7x7. For practice the difference is not noticeable.

Why does the timer need to be held before it starts?

Holding until the display turns green (about 0.3 seconds) copies the behavior of a competition stackmat timer, where both hands rest on the pads before the solve. It also stops accidental starts when you only tap the key.

Are my times saved?

Yes. Each puzzle size keeps its own session in your browser's local storage, so times stay after a refresh or restart. They are never uploaded. Clearing your browser data removes them, so use Download CSV to keep a permanent copy.

How precise is the timer?

The timer uses the browser's high-resolution clock and records milliseconds, then shows hundredths of a second like a stackmat. Single times are truncated to hundredths and averages are rounded to the nearest hundredth. Your reaction time when stopping matters far more than the clock's precision.
