How the lunar age and month are calculated
The Chinese calendar is lunisolar. Each month starts on the day of the astronomical new moon in China (UTC+8) and lasts 29 or 30 days. Twelve months make about 354 days, so roughly every third year has a 13th, leap month, placed where a month contains no major solar term. Chinese New Year is the first day of the first month and always falls between January 21 and February 20.
Lunar age at conception = (lunar year of conception) − (lunar year of the mother's birth) + 1. Example: a mother born on August 20, 1995 (lunar year 1995) who conceives on March 10, 2026 (lunar year 2026, 1st month) is 2026 − 1995 + 1 = 32 in lunar years, even though she is 30 in Western years.

Frequently asked questions
How does the Chinese gender chart work?
The chart is a grid with the mother's lunar age at conception (18 to 45) down the side and the lunar month of conception (1 to 12) across the top. Each cell says boy or girl. Legend says it was found in a royal tomb near Beijing, but there is no historical evidence for that story; it is a popular folk tradition.
What is lunar age?
Lunar age (xū suì) is the traditional Chinese way of counting age: a baby is 1 at birth, and everyone adds a year at Chinese New Year rather than on their birthday. It works out as the conception's lunar year minus the mother's birth lunar year plus 1, so it is usually 1 or 2 more than the Western age.
Why does the lunar month matter?
The chart uses Chinese lunar months, which begin on the day of the new moon (China time), so lunar month 1 usually starts between January 21 and February 20. The calculator converts your date with an astronomical new moon and solar term calculation, including leap months, which use the number of the month they repeat.
Is the Chinese gender predictor accurate?
No. A baby's sex is decided at conception by whether the sperm carries an X or a Y chromosome, and the mother's age and the month cannot change that. Studies comparing the chart with real birth records found it right about 50% of the time, the same as flipping a coin. Use it only for fun.
What if I only know the due date?
Choose Due date. Conception is estimated as 266 days (38 weeks) before the due date, which is the usual medical estimate. Near the edge of a lunar month this can change the answer, so the exact conception date is better if you know it.
Why do other websites give a different answer?
Several versions of the chart circulate with a few cells that differ, and some sites skip the lunar conversion and use the Western age and calendar month. This tool uses a commonly published version of the chart with a proper lunar calendar conversion.
How can I really find out the baby's sex?
Medical options include a cell-free DNA blood test (NIPT) from around 10 weeks and an ultrasound scan, typically at about 18 to 22 weeks. Ask your doctor or midwife.
