The six screensavers
| Screensaver | What you see | Good for | Options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starfield | Stars streak past as if you were flying through space | Big TVs, dark rooms | Speed |
| 3D pipes | Glossy pipes grow through a 3D grid, turning at ball joints, then the scene clears and starts again from a new angle | Retro computer nostalgia | Speed |
| Aquarium | Tropical fish swim both ways, seaweed sways and bubbles rise from the sand | Waiting rooms, kids, relaxing | Speed, light rays |
| Matrix rain | Columns of falling letters and symbols with bright heads and fading trails | Desk setups, parties | Speed, color |
| Bouncing logo | Your text in a colored badge bounces off the edges and changes color, counting perfect corner hits | Offices, events (show a team or event name) | Speed, text |
| Clock | A large glowing time and date that slowly drifts and shifts color | Bedside or kitchen displays, spare monitors | 12/24 h, seconds, drift speed |
Tips for running it on a TV or spare monitor
- Full screen first. Press Start full screen, or double-click the preview. The mouse pointer hides after two seconds of no movement.
- Keep it awake. Leave Keep screen awake ticked. If the status line says the wake lock is not supported, raise your device's screen timeout instead.
- Use the timers. Stop after ends the screensaver, leaves full screen and lets the display sleep again. Cycle every rotates through all six modes for variety.
- Protect OLED screens. Prefer moving modes such as Starfield, Aquarium or the drifting Clock rather than leaving a still image up for hours.
A short history of screensavers
Early CRT monitors could permanently "burn in" an image left on screen for a long time, because the phosphor coating wore unevenly. Screensaver programs appeared in the 1980s to blank or animate the display after a period of inactivity. Flying stars, growing pipes, aquariums and bouncing logos became some of the best-loved designs of the 1990s. Today they are mostly decorative, used to make an idle screen look good.
Frequently asked questions
Can a website really work as a screensaver?
A web page cannot replace your operating system's built-in screensaver or start by itself when you are idle, but it can run full screen and keep the display awake, which is how most people use it: on a TV, a second monitor, a lobby display or a laptop during a break. Press Start full screen and leave it running.
How does it keep my screen from turning off?
When Keep screen awake is ticked the page requests a screen wake lock through the Screen Wake Lock API, supported in Chrome, Edge, Opera, Samsung Internet and Safari 16.4 or later. The lock is released when you leave full screen, switch tabs or the stop timer ends. The status line under the controls says whether the lock is active.
Do screensavers still protect screens from burn-in?
Screensavers were invented to stop static images burning into old CRT monitors. Modern LCD screens are not prone to it, but OLED and plasma screens can still retain images that stay put for many hours. Moving pictures help, and the clock mode drifts its position slowly for that reason. Turning a display off is still the best protection.
Does the bouncing logo ever hit the corner exactly?
It can. The logo moves diagonally at a constant speed, so whether it reaches a corner depends on the screen size, the logo size and its starting point. The counter in the corner of the preview records every time the logo touches both edges at once (within a couple of pixels), and the logo flashes when it happens.
Will it use a lot of power or data?
No data is used after the page loads, because everything is drawn live with the canvas. Power use is similar to a simple animation. If you want to save battery, choose the clock or bouncing logo and lower the speed, and set a Stop after timer.
What is the matrix rain effect?
It is the popular effect of columns of characters falling down a dark screen, with a bright leading character and a fading trail. This version uses random letters, digits and symbols, and you can switch the color from classic green to blue, amber or rainbow.
