A short history of the fortune cookie

Despite their link with Chinese takeaway food, fortune cookies are an American invention with Japanese roots. Bakeries in and around San Francisco and Los Angeles were folding paper messages into thin, crisp cookies in the early 1900s, based on a sesame-and-miso cracker called tsujiura senbei made near Kyoto. When many Japanese-American bakers were forced into internment camps during the Second World War, Chinese-American businesses took over production, and the cookie became a fixture of Chinese restaurants across the United States.

How the fortune of the day is chosen

The daily fortune is not random each time you load the page. Today's date in your time zone (for example 2026-10-19) is turned into a number with a simple hash function. That number picks one fortune from the list and also seeds a small pseudo-random generator that draws the six lucky numbers. Because the same date always gives the same number, everyone sees the same fortune of the day, and it changes automatically at midnight.

    Lucky numbers and the odds

    DrawPossible combinationsChance of matching all
    6 numbers from 1–4913,983,8161 in 13,983,816
    5 numbers from 1–491,906,8841 in 1,906,884
    3 numbers from 1–4918,4241 in 18,424

The number of ways to choose 6 numbers from 49 is 49! ÷ (6! × 43!) = 13,983,816. Every combination, including your lucky numbers, has exactly the same chance, so enjoy them as a bit of fun.

    Frequently asked questions

How does the fortune cookie generator work?

Each time you crack a cookie, the page picks one of more than 160 original fortunes at random using your browser's secure random number generator, and draws six different lucky numbers between 1 and 49. Recently shown fortunes are skipped so you rarely see a repeat.

What is the fortune of the day?

The fortune of the day is chosen from today's date, so everyone who opens it on the same date sees the same fortune and lucky numbers. It changes at midnight in your local time zone.

Are the lucky numbers really lucky?

They are random numbers for fun. No number is luckier than another in a fair lottery, so please treat them as entertainment rather than a strategy.

Where do fortune cookies come from?

Fortune cookies are associated with Chinese restaurants in the United States, but they most likely trace back to Japanese bakeries in California in the early 1900s, inspired by a cracker from Kyoto. They are rarely served in China itself.

    Are my favourite fortunes saved?

Yes, up to 100 favourites are stored in your browser's local storage on this device. They are not uploaded anywhere, and clearing your browser data removes them.

    Can I share my fortune?

Press Share to use your device's share sheet, or Copy to put the fortune and lucky numbers on your clipboard so you can paste them into a message or post.
