How to use the Pickleball Score Keeper

  1. Choose doubles or singles and set the game length (11, 15 or 21) and match length.
  2. Enter team and player names. The first name in each team is the player who starts on the right-hand court.
  3. Pick the first serving team with Switch first server before the first rally if needed.
  4. After every rally, tap the team that won it. The tool adds a point only if the serving team won, otherwise it moves to the second server or calls a side-out.
  5. Call the big score out loud before each serve, and press Start next game when a game ends. Use Undo to fix any mistake.

How pickleball scoring works (side-out scoring)

Pickleball uses traditional side-out scoring in most recreational and sanctioned play: points are scored only by the team that is serving. Every rally ends in one of three outcomes, and the score keeper applies the matching rule automatically.

What happenedDoublesSingles
Serving team wins the rally+1 point to the serving team; the server and partner swap left/right courts; same player serves again+1 point; server moves to the right court if the new score is even, left if odd
Receiving team wins, server 1 servingNo point; the partner becomes server 2 and serves from where they standSide-out: the opponent serves
Receiving team wins, server 2 servingSide-out: the other team serves; their player on the right court is server 1Side-out
Start of the gameOnly one server in the first turn, so the call is 0-0-2Server starts on the right at 0-0

Reading the called score

The big number at the top is exactly what the server should say before serving. In doubles it is serving team score – receiving team score – server number, so 7-5-2 means the serving team has 7, the receivers have 5 and the second server is up. In singles only two numbers are called. A handy check in doubles: when the serving team's score is even, the player who started the game on the right should be on the right again (as long as no one has made a positioning error).

Tips for keeping score on court

  • Leave the phone at the net post and let one player tap after each rally, or use the keyboard (A / B) on a laptop for league play.
  • Turn on Speak score so everyone hears the call; it helps settle the classic "what's the score?" debate.
  • Disagreement about a rally? Use Undo to step back any number of rallies and replay the point.
  • Playing rally scoring? This tool follows standard side-out scoring. For rally-scoring formats, the general online scoreboard is a better fit.

Frequently asked questions

How do you call the score in pickleball doubles?

Before each serve the server calls three numbers: the serving team's score, the receiving team's score, then the server number (1 or 2). For example 4-2-1 means the serving team has 4, the opponents have 2, and the first server of that team is serving.

Why does a doubles game start at 0-0-2?

To offset the advantage of serving first, only one player on the starting team gets to serve in the first service turn. That player is treated as the second server, so the opening call is 0-0-2, and the first fault results in a side-out.

Can the receiving team score a point?

Not in traditional side-out scoring. Only the serving team can score. When the receiving team wins a rally, the serve passes to the second server or, if both partners have served, goes to the other team as a side-out. This tool follows that rule.

What is a side-out in pickleball?

A side-out is when the serve passes from one team to the other. In doubles it happens when the serving team loses a rally while their second server is serving (or during the first service turn of the game). The new serving team always starts with the player on the right-hand court as server 1.

Which side does the server serve from?

The first serve of each service turn is made from the right-hand court. In doubles the server switches sides with their partner after every point they win. In singles you serve from the right when your score is even and from the left when it is odd.

How many points is a pickleball game and do you have to win by 2?

Most games are played to 11 points and must be won by 2, so a game can go to 12-10, 13-11 and beyond. Tournaments sometimes use games to 15 or 21, also win by 2. You can choose 11, 15 or 21 here.

When do players switch ends?

Players usually change ends after each game. In the deciding game of a match, teams switch ends when the first team reaches 6 points in a game to 11 (8 in a game to 15, 11 in a game to 21). The score keeper shows a reminder at that moment.
