Cost per page formulas
Black ink per page = black cartridge price ÷ page yield × coverage factor
Color ink per color page = number of color cartridges × color cartridge price ÷ color yield × coverage factor
Paper per page = ream price ÷ sheets per ream (÷ 2 when double-sided)
Black & white page = black ink + paper; color page = black ink + color ink + paper
Monthly cost = pages × average cost per page (+ printer price ÷ months of life)
Prices are illustrative; enter what you actually pay. Paper adds about 1.5–2¢ per sheet at typical ream prices.
Ways to lower your printing cost
Buy high-yield (XL) cartridges: they usually cost less per page than standard ones.
Print drafts in grayscale or draft mode, and double-sided when you can.
Avoid printing full-page color images on cartridge inkjets; they use several times the rated ink.
If you print a lot, compare the total cost over two or three years including the printer price.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate printing cost per page?
Ink or toner cost per page = cartridge price ÷ page yield. Add paper cost per sheet (ream price ÷ sheets). For a color page, add the color cartridges' cost per page on top of black. Example: a $30 black cartridge rated for 300 pages costs 10¢ per page, plus about 1.8¢ for paper.
What does page yield mean?
Page yield is the number of pages a cartridge prints in a standard test. Ink cartridges are rated with ISO/IEC 24711 and laser toner with ISO/IEC 19752 (mono) or 19798 (color), using a set of typical office pages. Pages with more ink, like photos or dense charts, use more and lower the real yield.
Why does my cartridge print fewer pages than the box says?
Heavy coverage, color graphics, frequent print-head cleaning on inkjets and long idle periods all use extra ink. Use the 'What you print' setting to scale the rated yield to your typical pages.
Is an ink tank printer cheaper per page?
Usually yes. Refillable ink tank printers cost more up front but their bottles print thousands of pages, so ink often costs well under 1¢ per page versus several cents with standard cartridges. Use the printer price field to include the higher purchase price.
Is laser printing cheaper than inkjet?
For black and white text, mono laser toner is often cheaper per page than standard ink cartridges and doesn't dry out. Color lasers have higher toner and upfront costs. Compare with your own cartridge prices and yields.
Does double-sided printing save money?
It halves paper use, so paper cost per page drops by half. Ink or toner per printed side stays the same.
