Worked example

With the letters L P A E Y R the unscrambler finds four six-letter anagrams: PARLEY, PEARLY, PLAYER and REPLAY. Each scores 3 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 1 = 11 points in Scrabble (P = 3, Y = 4, the rest 1). Add a blank (lpaeyr?) and you also get seven-letter words such as PLAYERS, where the S comes from the blank and scores 0.

Tips to find better words

  • Look for hooks: adding S, ED, ER or ING to a word already on the board often scores twice. Put the board word in Starts with and tick the board option.
  • Use the high-value letters: J, Q, X and Z are worth 8–10 points. Put one in Contains to see every word that uses it.
  • Short words count: two-letter words such as QI, XI and JO (and ZA in official word lists) let you place a valuable tile on a bonus square.
  • Bingo: using all seven tiles in one turn earns a 50-point bonus in Scrabble (35 in Words With Friends). Tick Only words that use all my letters to check for one.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word unscrambler work?

It compares your letters with every word in the dictionary and keeps the words that can be spelled with them, using each letter only as many times as you typed it. Blank tiles (?) can stand for any letter. The whole check takes a few milliseconds in your browser.

How do I use blank tiles or wildcards?

Type a question mark for each blank tile, for example retain? to find seven-letter words like retains and retinas. You can also use * or _. Letters filled by a blank are shown underlined in orange and score zero points, as in Scrabble.

Are these words valid in Scrabble?

The list contains about 109,000 common English words, not an official tournament word list such as NWL (North America) or Collins Scrabble Words. Most results are playable, but some rare tournament words are missing and a few results (such as abbreviations) may not be allowed. Check a dictionary if a challenge matters.

How are the points calculated?

Points are the sum of the letter values: in Scrabble A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T and R are 1, D and G are 2, B, C, M and P are 3, F, H, V, W and Y are 4, K is 5, J and X are 8, and Q and Z are 10. Words With Friends uses its own values. Board bonuses such as double and triple word squares are not included.

What does the board option do?

Normally the starts with, contains and ends with letters must come from your own letters. If you tick Filter letters are already on the board, those letters are added to your tiles, so you can find words that build on a letter or word that is already played.

Can it solve anagrams and word jumbles?

Yes. Tick Only words that use all my letters to see only full anagrams, for example listen gives silent, enlist and tinsel. For daily jumble puzzles enter the scrambled word and look at the longest group.
