Scrabble letter values and tile counts
| Points | Letters (English Scrabble) | Tiles in the bag |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Blank | 2 |
| 1 | E, A, I, O, N, R, T, L, S, U | E×12, A×9, I×9, O×8, N×6, R×6, T×6, L×4, S×4, U×4 |
| 2 | D, G | D×4, G×3 |
| 3 | B, C, M, P | 2 each |
| 4 | F, H, V, W, Y | 2 each |
| 5 | K | 1 |
| 8 | J, X | 1 each |
| 10 | Q, Z | 1 each |
A standard English set has 100 tiles. Your score for a play is the sum of the letter values, multiplied by any premium squares you cover (double or triple letter, double or triple word), plus 50 points if you used all seven tiles.
Worked example
The rack A E I N R S T is one of the best in the game: official tournament lists accept nine seven-letter words from it (ANESTRI, ANTSIER, NASTIER, RATINES, RETAINS, RETINAS, RETSINA, STAINER and STEARIN). Each letter is worth 1 point, so the word scores 7 points plus the 50-point bingo, 57 points before premium squares. Swap the T for a blank (aeinrs?) and the finder lists words such as ARSENIC and SARDINE, with the blank letter scoring 0.
Strategy tips
- Keep a balanced rack. Holding letters like E, R, S, T and a blank makes bingos far more likely on your next turn.
- Use the high tiles on premium squares. A Q or Z on a triple letter square is worth 30 points by itself. Type the letter in Contains to list every word that uses it.
- Learn the short words. Two-letter words such as QI, XI, JO and OX let you score in tight spots and play parallel to other words.
- Hook with S. Put a word already on the board in Starts with to see longer words that extend it.

Frequently asked questions
How are Scrabble points calculated here?
Each word scores the sum of its letter values: A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T and R are 1 point, D and G are 2, B, C, M and P are 3, F, H, V, W and Y are 4, K is 5, J and X are 8, and Q and Z are 10. Blank tiles score 0. Using all 7 tiles from your rack adds a 50-point bingo bonus. Premium squares on the board are not included because they depend on where you play.
How do I use blank tiles?
Type a question mark for each blank, for example retain? or qaeit?s. The finder tries every letter for each blank and shows the letters it chose in orange. Because blanks score 0, the same word can score less when it needs a blank.
What does “Pattern letters are already on the board” mean?
When it is ticked, letters you type in Starts with, Contains or Ends with are treated as tiles already on the board, so they are added to your rack and every result must include them. Untick it if those letters must come from your own rack.
What is a bingo in Scrabble?
A bingo (called a bonus in some countries) is playing all seven tiles from your rack in one turn. It earns an extra 50 points in Scrabble and 35 points in Words With Friends. The finder marks those words with a BINGO badge and includes the bonus in the score.
Is every result a valid Scrabble word?
The finder uses a list of about 109,000 English words. It is not the official NWL or Collins tournament list, so a few tournament-only words are missing and a few results may not be accepted. Use your game’s official dictionary if a word is challenged.
Does it work for Words With Friends?
Yes. Choose Words With Friends in Letter scores to use its letter values (for example J and Z are 10, X is 8) and its 35-point bonus for using all seven tiles.
