Turn a phone photo or scan of your handwritten signature into a clean, transparent PNG. The tool evens out shadows, removes the paper and specks, lets you pick black or blue ink and crops tightly around the strokes so you can drop the signature into any document.

How to use the Signature Background Remover
Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, then photograph or scan it in good, even light. A sample photo is loaded so you can try the tool first.
Add the photo: drop it on the box, paste it with Ctrl+V or press Choose image. The paper is removed automatically.
Fine-tune the clean-up: raise Paper cut-off if gray paper or shadow remains, lower it if thin strokes break up, and raise speck removal to drop dust dots.
Pick the ink color and stroke weight, and use Straighten if the signature is tilted. Check it on the dark preview to spot leftover paper.
Choose the output width and press Download transparent PNG, or copy the image and paste it straight into your document.
How the signature clean-up works
A photo of a signature is never pure white paper and pure ink: the paper is gray in the corners, warmer under a lamp and darker where your phone casts a shadow. Removing one fixed color would leave blotches, so the tool works in four steps:
Paper estimate. The picture is split into small blocks and the brightest typical value of each block is taken as the local paper brightness. The block map is spread and smoothed so that blocks fully covered by ink borrow the paper level of their neighbors.
Darkness map. Every pixel is compared with the paper underneath it: darkness = 1 − pixel brightness ÷ paper brightness. Paper becomes 0, solid ink close to 1, no matter how the light falls.
Threshold with soft edges. The automatic setting uses Otsu's method to find the split between paper and ink, then sits a little below it so faint stroke edges are kept. Pixels below the cut-off become fully transparent; pixels in a small band above it become partly transparent, which keeps the strokes smooth.
Speck removal and crop. Separate ink islands smaller than the speck size (dust, dots, pen marks on the scanner glass) are removed, and the image is cropped to the remaining strokes plus a margin.

No transparency, so place it only on white backgrounds
Tips for a clean signature photo
Use a black or dark blue gel or felt-tip pen; ballpoint strokes are thin and uneven.
Sign larger than usual, about 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 in) wide, and fill most of the photo with the signature.
Photograph in daylight from straight above, holding the phone so it does not cast a shadow. Turn the flash off to avoid a bright hot spot.
Plain printer paper works best. Lined or colored paper usually cleans up too, but faint lines may need a higher paper cut-off.
Keep the transparent PNG in a safe place and only share it with documents you mean to sign.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make my signature a transparent PNG?
Sign on white paper, take a sharp photo or scan, and load it here. The tool removes the paper, keeps the ink with smooth edges and crops around it. Press Download transparent PNG: the file has an alpha channel, so only the strokes show when you place it on a document.
Why is there still a gray shadow around my signature?
Phone photos are often darker at one side. Keep Even out shadows switched on, then raise Paper cut-off a few steps until the shadow disappears. Taking the photo near a window without your hand or phone casting a shadow gives the cleanest result.
Can I change the ink color to blue or black?
Yes. Original keeps the real pen color, cleaned of the paper tint. Black, Blue or a Custom color repaints every stroke in one flat color while keeping the soft edges, which looks crisp in contracts and forms.
What size should a signature image be?
For emails and web forms about 400 to 600 px wide is plenty. For documents and PDFs that may be printed, 1200 px wide keeps the strokes sharp at a typical signature width of about 2 inches (5 cm) at 300 dpi or more. Use 2400 px for large prints.
Is a signature image legally binding?
Rules depend on the country and the document. Many everyday agreements accept electronic signatures, but some documents require a handwritten or certified digital signature. This tool only prepares the image; check what the recipient or the law requires.
Is my signature uploaded anywhere?
No. All processing uses your browser's canvas on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so your signature cannot be collected or reused by this site.
Why do thin strokes break up or disappear?
Light pen pressure or a gray pencil can be almost as bright as the paper. Lower Paper cut-off, set Edge smoothness higher, or choose a bolder stroke weight. Next time, use a black or dark blue gel pen for strong contrast.
